Content Update: AP® Chemistry beta

This is really helpful! But for those studying for the exam in 2020, when will you guys be adding more of the units covered on the test? Thanks!

Hi Grace! While we are working on building new content for the later units, it unfortunately won't be ready in time for the 2020 exam. However, we do have many videos and articles that cover most of the topics in these units in our older AP Chemistry course, which you can find here. Hope that helps!

AP Chemistry Beta is pretty helpful! I have been looking foward to exercise about chemistry for a long time!

From previous comments, I know that some courses will not be ready in time for exam in 2020. Will more units be available before 2020 exam? (I am not a native English speaker, and hope that I have not made some grammer mistakes or some offensive content..) Thanks!

This looks amazing! But I was wondering if you guys are going to add topics on coordination chemistry, ligands, complex ions, and crystal field theory because they weren't on the old one. Thank you!

Thanks, 24karnati_kundan! At the moment, we don't have any plans to add content on those topics since they aren't covered in AP Chemistry. However, we'll keep your feedback in mind for expanding our courses in the future!

If I complete the tests and exercises on the old course and it gets replaced by the newer one, will my progress be deleted?

Hi chloe! The older AP Chemistry course doesn't have any exercises - it's likely that you've completed exercises in the general Chemistry course, which won't be affected when the older AP Chemistry course is eventually replaced by AP Chemistry beta. Hope that helps!

I'm using this to prepare myself for taking chemistry in college since I don't remember anything about high school chemistry and will end up having to major in chemistry for pharmacy in college. Therefore, I'd like to know if there will be any more units released before the end of August this year. 

Hi Riley Mauro! We're currently working on building out the rest of Unit 3, which we hope to have completed by the end of summer. In the meantime, I highly recommend checking out the older AP Chemistry and general Chemistry courses, both of which have lots of articles and videos covering many of the topics in high school chemistry. There is also some practice content in the general Chemistry course that you might find helpful. Good luck with your preparations!

Would the course be ready by the 2021 exam? I am thinking of taking the AP chemistry exam next year and being able to have such a wonderful resource on Khan Academy would be really helpful. 

Hi Gerardo Rodriguez! The course won't be complete by the 2021 exam, but we're hard at work creating new content and hope to have over 50% coverage by then. I hope you'll find it a useful resource when you take AP Chemistry next year - don't forget that we also have lots of helpful videos and articles in our older AP Chemistry course, as well :)

I'm an adult learner going through Khan Academy Chemistry right now. I''m also jumping into the existing AP Chemistry periodically to see if there's any material that is not in "plain old" Chemistry. I want to eventually do every bit of Chemistry you have available.

I'm an iPad user. Please, please, PLEASE make the AP Chemistry Beta part of both the iPad and Android apps! I don't want to have to go back a year from now, after I've moved on to other Khan Academy pursuits, and relearn all of the new material and take the new practice exercises and unit tests!

I just verified that AP Chemistry beta is available through both the iOS and Android Khan Academy apps (it's the last subject listed under the science domain). Thanks for getting back to me so soon! I found the course, but it has a lot of practice exercises with no videos or articles to learn the material before them. I tried matching a few to subject areas in both AP Chemistry and "plain old" Chemistry but with no luck. Would it be possible, please to stick the relevant videos and/or articles in front of each practice exercise even if they repeat ones that are in one or both of the other two Chemistry courses?

Hi Regina Litman! We released those exercises without any videos or articles in order to get them out to students preparing for the 2020 AP Chemistry exam as soon as possible - we'll be filling in the gaps periodically over the next month or two. Sorry for the delay!

Hi Merlyn Varkey - good question! This year, the AP Chemistry exam will cover Units 1-7. Currently, our AP Chemistry beta course has videos, articles, and exercises for all of Units 1-2 and part of Unit 3. For the other units, I'd recommend checking out our older AP Chemistry course, which has videos and articles covering most of the material in these units. Hey,I have a doubt can this section be used by students from india who are studying for the JEE exam? 

Hi Rohan Radeeh! The AP Chemistry beta course covers some (but not all) of the topics on the JEE exam, and it isn't well-aligned to the exam. With that in mind, I wouldn't recommend using it exclusively to study for the JEE, but I think it could be a nice supplement if you're looking for extra practice. I hope that helps!

Hello there! Will the AP Chemistry course be fully developed in time for the 2021 exam? Are there going to be  any summer 2020 updates to the course?

Hi Sanjana B.! The AP Chemistry beta course won't be complete for the 2021 exam, but we expect to have content covering nearly 60% of the exam by then. As for updates to the course, we'll be releasing the rest of Unit 3 on a rolling basis over the next few months, and we hope to have Unit 4 finished by the end of the year. I hope that helps!

This is wonderful! It is exciting to see that AP Chemistry will now have practice questions along with the videos! I wish I would have had this last year when I took AP Chemistry but I am glad that the future will now have this wonderful resource! As a student who fully completed the AP Calculus BC course on Khan Academy, I know the true benefit of the practice problems offered on Khan Academy and I am really happy that the next students will be able to use this!

Should I use AP Chemistry or regular Chemistry because I heard AP is a lot better to work with? Sorry if this doesn't make sense but I'm new to this. I'm in the 10th grade and a friend recommended this.

Hi Lucifer01! It depends on what your goals are, but here is some info that may help you decide: the AP Chemistry beta course has many more practice exercises than the general Chemistry course, and it's intended to be followed from beginning to end. However, the AP Chemistry beta course isn't yet complete (currently, we have almost three out of nine total units). Additionally, students typically take AP Chemistry after having taken a high school chemistry course, so the material is often designed with that in mind.

In contrast, the general Chemistry course contains many more videos and articles covering a wider breadth of topics, but it is more of a "library" of content - it's not designed to be followed from start to finish, so sometimes the videos and articles assume prior knowledge that you might not already have.

Absolutely love it!!!! I should have big exams next year from Chemistry so this is really good preparation. I hope there will be more content soon because Khan academy helped me with Maths a lot and this way I could really improve my Chemistry.
