Update: New and Improved AP® Biology!

Thanks for this update! I have not yet attempted Biology (either AP, High School, or "plain old") on Khan Academy but hope to get there eventually.

I am doing AP Physics 1 and the parts of Physics that correspond to AP 1 right now. AP 1 has the new course mastery system, but AP 2 doesn't have it (yet). Physics has a few practices, some of which accumulate mastery points (with corresponding unit quizzes and tests), and a couple that are just old style practices. Some of these mastery practices in Physics are not the same as ones in AP 1. I hope that the mastery will be added to AP Physics 2 soon.

I'm also waiting for AP Physics 2. Only videos are not sufficient to master the content.

If you are using the iPad version, on the All Courses page, look in the Science row, which is the second one from the top.You will likely need to swipe this row from right to left in order to bring it into view. As of now, it is all the way at the right hand end of the row. Normally, it is further in (although still one of the rightmost listed courses), with Biology and High school biology, probably right in between them based on where it is found in the Android phone app. This placement at the end is probably temporary, either by mistake or intentionally. because of the ongoing changes.

If you are using the Android phone version, on the Explore page, look in the Science row, which is anywhere from the second through the fourth one from the top (depending on whether or not you have Recent activity and/or Recent courses). Look for "See all >" on the right hand side of the screen across from the Science row label and select it. This will give you a list of all the Science courses. Scroll down until you see AP Biology between Biology and High school biology. You can also scroll from right to left in the Science row until you see AP Biology, again between Biology and High school biology.

If you are using either the iPhone or Android tablet version, I am not familiar with the interfaces for these, but if you see common elements with the above apps, I suggest you follow them.

as part of working on this AP course does that mean pop questions are being produced for each sub-topic, the likes of which found on the high school biology course.

Our science content creators are hard at work creating new practice questions for AP Biology. I'm happy to report that we'll have several more sets of these (practice exercises) coming out on the course site at the end of this week (April 19th)! 

We'll be working through the summer and into the next school year to finish adding practice exercises to the AP Biology course. By the time we're finished, every AP Biology lesson will have its own set of practice questions.

All of us on the content team hope you find these questions, and all the articles and videos, useful as you study Biology and get ready for the exam. Good luck, and I hope you're enjoying AP Biology as much as I did when I took it (I was a biologist before I started working with Khan Academy)!

@Grover Underwood and anyone else who uses an app version of Khan Academy:

The layout I described above has changed for versions 6.0 and higher of both the iPad and Android phone app. Here are new instructions:

iPad:

1. If you have already chosen AP Biology on the website as one of your courses, you will see it in the "My Courses" section at the top of the screen that appears when you open the app. If this is the case, just click on it there, and as much younger people than I am would say, "You're good to go."

2. If you haven't already chosen AP Biology as one of your courses (and telling you how to do this is beyond the scope of this reply due to time constrains on my end right now), scroll down to the Browse Khan Academy section. If you don't have anything in My courses, this section will likely be right at the top for you. Click on the Science icon, which should be the second one from the left on the top row.

3. Now you should be on the Science page. AP Biology is currently the only one with a purple colored icon. On my iPad mini screen, it is in the second row, between High school biology and Cosmology and astronomy. Click on it to enter the course.

On an Android phone:

1. Follow the same instructions as iPad if you already have AP Biology in your My courses list.

2. If you don't have it in your My courses list, or you don't have a My courses list at all, scroll down (if necessary) to Browse Khan Academy and follow the same instructions as iPad. The Science icon should be second in the list view that is shown under Browse Khan Academy.

3. Now you should be on the Science page with the course icons in a list. Scroll down to AP Biology, which is between High school biology and Cosmology and astronomy. Click on it to enter the course.

If you have an iPhone or Android tablet, follow the instructions for your app that most closely fit the instructions above.

@Adam Green - Does the scope of your duties as Sciences Content Manager also include Physics? I am an adult learner currently doing Advanced Placement (AP) Physics 1 plus videos, articles, and the occasional practices that are in "plain old" Physics for the same subjects covered in AP Physics 1 but aren't in that course now.

AP Physics 2 does not have practices, unit tests, etc. Do you know if there are any plans to add these soon? If these are coming along soon (such as the next 6 months), I can study something else while waiting for them to be added to AP Physics 2. But if not, I will do AP Physics anyway and go back to do the mastery if it is ever added. (I will probably need to review a lot before attempting it, though.)

Yes, I manage the physics, biology, chemistry, and computer science subjects on the U.S. version of Khan Academy. I'm really glad to hear that you're getting use out of our existing AP (and non-AP) physics content! 

Unfortunately, it's not likely that we'll be able to add practice content (exercise questions, including quizzes, etc) to any of our physics courses in the next 6-12 months. I do plan to make sure that type of content, as well as mastery, is eventually added to AP Physics. In the meantime, I hope the instructional content in those courses (and the practice questions that are currently there) helps you in your learning!

Is the new AP Biology course currently at a state where I can study using that for the AP exam, or is it still incomplete (i.e. missing some topics)?

Hi Colin!

The new AP Biology course is a good resource to use while you study for your exam next week. Even though the videos and articles cover what we expect will be on the exam, it's not a 100% substitute for the work you've done in your classroom over the course of the whole year. The main things that are missing now are practice questions for many of the lessons. We'll be adding those over the summer and into the next school year.

I'm extremely happy that AP Bio is getting some practice exercises. Will you guys also get physics 2 exercises in by the end of the year? The physics 1 exercises really helped me this year and I think exercises for physics 2 will also help this upcoming year's exam.

hi i was just wondering if you guys can add a 1 or 2 course tests to the AP Biology course page?

Thanks for your question about AP Biology! We're working hard to add more practice questions. As soon as we have enough of those across all the Units, we'll be adding Unit tests and a Course test. It'll be at least a few months before those are ready. 

We're not able to provide sample exams, but College Board provides some practice questions from old exams here. I hope that helps!

Thank you to everyone who is contributing to this course, as well as the other AP courses. I am a grade 9 student, and for my first year of eligibility, I am taking four AP examinations (AP Calculus AB, AP Statistics, AP Biology and AP Chemistry). Khan Academy has been extremely helpful for me, as not only does my school not offer AP classes (I have to self-teach myself), but as I have not learnt many of the prerequisite notions, I often have to review concepts.

Well I am 38yr old hopping to get back to college soon, and working to get night scores on my upcoming exams because there others places I can take them, and this site brought my faith back in learning.

Well my contry doesn’t take yet ap exams but on Edx and Alison certified training can give me depromas, ap exams and certificates so right now I’m aiming to get the best scores I can, so I’ll need to give up my fav games until I complete my diplomas and exams.

please post the content  for agriculture subjects for bsc. agriculture and MSc. agriculture(horticulture,agronomy,biochemistry,crop physiology,agribusiness,agriculture economics,agriculture extention,agroforestry,animal science,Soil science,Genetics,Agrometrology,Plant breeding, etc.)

It will be very supportive for us if we get the separate content in these topics.

I am excited to see new content added. Will this also include an "Official" certification/approval by the College Board for the class/content because I understanding now, it isn't. It is just a way to assist with test prep. Thanks!

Right now, we're working on finishing up the AP Biology course, which is tightly aligned to the College Board AP Biology Course and Exam Description [link to PDF). That description doesn't include the topics you listed, but we'll be building much more biology content after we finish with AP Biology. Hopefully, some of that will fit your learning needs!

Although we develop all of our AP Biology content using the College Board AP Biology Course and Exam Description, College Board itself does not review or certify/approve the material we create. We don't currently have any plans to change that.

We hope that our content helps learners prep for the AP exam as well as help to bring clarity to any difficult topics encountered throughout the year.
