Content Update: Updates to our Statistics courses!

Today we've released substantial updates to our AP®︎/College Statistics and High School Statistics courses. I'll let our Math team tell you more!

High School Statistics

Hello! I’m Jeff on the math content team here at Khan Academy, and I’m happy to share that we’ve updated our High school statistics course to make it better than ever. As a former high school math teacher, I’ll admit that teaching statistics was always my favorite, so it was a real treat to spend my time improving this course for you.

Here’s what I’m most excited about when it comes to the new look of our High school statistics course:

• We completely revamped the course with our freshest and best content. There are a lot of new videos, exercises, and articles in the course that weren’t there before. The course now covers a broader range of topics at a greater depth than before. For example, we now have practice content on calculating expected value and more practice content on interpreting what expected value does (and doesn’t) say.

• The course is now better aligned to Common Core high school statistics and probability standards. We have new instructional and practice content for standards in topics like study design, probability distributions, and expected value. We also removed some content that’s more appropriate for other grade levels, so learners can focus on what’s most important in a high school course.

• Video and exercises go beyond rote procedures and contextless data. Learners apply both concepts and procedures in real-world contexts. They’ll wrestle with scenarios like, “Should I buy that protection plan the company offers me when I get a new phone?”

AP®︎/College Statistics

I’m also happy to share that we’ve updated our AP®/College Statistics course to make it better than ever. Most of the changes are structural, and we think you’ll appreciate the tweaks!

Here are the highlights of what we did:

• We’ve restructured the course to better align with the official course and exam description from College Board. Previously, this course was aligned in scope with College Board’s official course and exam description for AP® Statistics,  but our course units were in a slightly different sequence. This is no longer the case! Our course is now aligned both in scope and sequence with the official course and exam description.

• Our unit names and sequence make it easier than ever to find content that aligns with what you or your students are learning. The names of our units and lessons largely correspond to the names of units and lessons in the course and exam description, so no matter where you are in the course, you’ll be able to find instructional or practice content for any given topic.

• We’ve streamlined the course by moving some prerequisite content to our Get ready for AP® Statistics course. We wanted to keep our AP®/College Statistics course focused on just the topics that are in the course and exam description, while also giving teachers and students a curation of the most important prerequisite content. Get ready for AP® Statistics is the new home for topics that aren’t necessarily in the course and exam description for AP® Statistics, but are foundational to learner success in AP® Statistics.
