I went to the Chemistry library (https://www.khanacademy.org/science/chemistry) and started with the first unit Atoms, compounds, and ions (https://www.khanacademy.org/science/chemistry/atomic-structure-and-properties), but the exercise Predict the charge on monatomic ions (https://www.khanacademy.org/science/chemistry/atomic-structure-and-properties/names-and-formulas-of-ionic-compounds/e/predict-charges-on-monatomic-ions) talks about 'valence electrons' and those weren't mentioned in any earlier lessons.

Should I pick a different course as a beginner?

Hi Dennis,

We're currently working on a new High School Chemistry course that will be more geared towards students with no previous chemistry knowledge. However, until that course is completed, the regular Chemistry course would be the easiest course for beginners.

The problem is that the regular course you linked is the one that has the problems I mentioned in my initial post.
