I am a homeschool mom (taught my children k-12). Currently, I am schooling my 11th grade son and helping a friend with her 5th grader. I want to use Kahn Academy as a teacher for the 5th grader and possibly 11th grader; however, as a homeschool teacher - my "school" is not listed. How do I start a teacher account? Should I use "parent" account? Is parent and teacher account the same?
i'm in the same boat - i signed up as a parent instead of teacher for my homeschool kids - but can not anywhere find anyway to assign coursework, ensure what they are doing - it only allows me to see what they have gotten on and played with during the day.... I have no way to access behind the scenes and see or assign since he is now 13????

Log in to Khan Academy, click on your name, click Settings, scroll down to Role, and where you have Parent selected, you can either switch to or add a checkmark for Teacher/Coach. I set myself and my husband as Teachers and we're both Parents. I am actually certified to teach secondary English and journalism and I'm familiar with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards, but that's not required for homeschooling in Texas of course. We each lead different homeschool classes. For each class my kids have to take, I set up a Class, invite my kid(s), pick a course, set a goal, and invite my kid via a link. To make it easier, I log in as my kid, and accept the class invitation. For example, my sophomore needs to take Geometry, so I added my Hepple Geometry 10 class, invited my sophomore, picked the High School Geometry course and the Getting Ready for Geometry course, and assigned a Unit with a deadline for mid-month. Another example, both my teenagers have to take an English course for their grade (sophomore and senior) but Khan doesn't have literature; it just has Grammar. I set up a Hepple English 10 for my sophomore and Hepple English 12 for my senior; both have a goal to master Grammar by mid-March, and have assignments to master Nouns unit by the end of 1 week. For literature, I picked up Windows to the World teacher & student guides by Lesha Myers to cover both teenagers in terms of discussion, but I'll assign my senior readings from Literature British Tradition by Prentice Hall. It doesn't look like it's possible to make those external reading assignments in the Khan dashboard, so we'll have to track any off-site assignments separately, probably in Google Classroom or Edmodo, both of which offer basic services for free. Thank you so much for this information. I am working on setting up a "summer school" learning plan for my son who is going into 7th grade. Google Classroom worked really well for him to manage his work during the school year, so I am trying to incorporate that for the summer.
