It's all well and good to have apps for Apple and Android... But when there are users who have Kindles and therefore can't download Android apps NOT approved by Amazon... We're stuck. It would be wonderful to see this happen... And seeing as it's been asked for repeatedly since early 2015... It might be a good idea, KA!

The Amazon Kindle Fire for kids is the commonly rated as the best tablet for kids. I recently got one each, for my kids.
Then I was really bummed to find that they couldn't get a complete Khan Academy app! The "video viewer" app that is available is something, but not the full (awesome) experience.

i second this im getting a kindle soon and would be nice to be able to use it to take tests ect although because a kindle is android based might be able to enable the developer options in the kindle to run android apps i found this article that walks you thru how to run andriod apps on a kindle

I have the Khan Academy app running on a Fire 8 2019, sorta under Freetime.
First, I downloaded the 6.1.1 apk from apkmirror.com and put it on a MicroSD card (16GB - a 256GB didn't work).
The way Freetime works it's not able to be added to the app menu unless it came from the Amazon app store. Also, because Freetime uses entirely separate profiles, the app needs to installed in the child account (and probably every separate child account, on every device, for an n^2 problem).
I added the ES File Explorer app from my account to the child account. After switching to the child account, I navigated to the SD card and installed the APK. I turned off "unknown sources" protection for this. Now it's installed but the child can't launch it.
Then I paid $2 for a fairly terrible launcher app called "GoToApp Full", added it to the child account, and then under the child account deleted everything from its launcher screen except Khan Academy. There's a huge "+" button there just begging a kid to add more apps and I didn't see any way to set a PIN code or anything, so, meh, this is a giant hole in Freetime restrictions. I suppose you do have the time-of-day restrictions left. Maybe I'll hack up a dedicated KA launcher app if this persists as a problem.
With all that done, the Khan Academy app seems to work. I answered some math questions and watched a video. Just a smoke test so far.
Launching 'Settings' from "GoToApp" lets you turn off the "unknown sources" toggle and then go back to Freetime and remove ES from the child profile.
I would think that with the mass availability of $30 tablets (Prime Day / refurb) via Amazon that Fire support would be a good target to advance the educational mission of Khan. It's not just about supporting one brand, it's enabling a new market. I can't even get a Raspberry Pi with KVM for $30 but I have several kids here who have their own tablets; we live in a magic time and should take full advantage of that.
Notably there were no complaints about needing to install Google Play Services or anything Play-Store specific (kudos for not falling into a Google lock-in trap), so I do hope the Academy changes its mind and uploads the app to Amazon. So many kids with Kindle devices would see life-long benefit.
@Bill I was able to find the Khan Academy Kids app in the Amazon app store by signing into the parent account on each of my kids' tablets. I couldn't find it by searching the FreeTime store under their profile. I installed the app from the Amazon store, then went into Settings > Profile & Family Library and chose the child's account I wanted to manage. From there I tapped Add Content > Share Content > Games & Apps and added it from there. I then signed into the child's profile and it was right there in the FreeTime launcher. Hope this helps!
@Mike Brown The Khan Academy Kids app is available but the Khan Academy app is not. The Kids version only goes to 1st grade. The regular one starts at 2nd grade. My daughters are just about done with the 1st grade content so I came here looking for a way to get the non-kid version installed. It's a shame there hasn't even been an official response to this thread from Khan Academy in over 4 years. Guess, I will try to get it to side load as Bill McGonigle suggested. Thanks Bill!
I simply added the site www.khan academy.org to my child’s profile and they can access the content from their kids dashboard. I have to log them in, but it appears to work so far. An app would be more convenient, but this workaround is free and as I said “appears” to work fine so far.
