This is a good idea, and one addition can be: Adding a seperate page when after clicking on mastered/proficient/familiar/attempted takes you to every thing you've done in the past and which you need to get proficient/mastered on.

Even better idea: Bring back the Missions portal. Us legacy users were very familiar with the design and it had a lot of helpful statistics, including (but not limited to) the number of Proficient and Mastered Skills, and progress to badges like Newton and Kepler (and even Atlas if you got close enough).

Whats the mission portal and when was it established?

Basically it was the old KA math course interface. I had used it for ~three years before it was retired, but tbh I do not remember much about it because I was 8 when it was retired.

See this youtube video for what it looked like. Apparently it also told you how much more you had to do before getting badges (e.g. Magellan after two more mastered skills) among other things. It also recommended skills to you, and yeah that's what I remember about it

I was almost 11 when it retired. I joined KA when I was 6 1/2 so I had some 4 years with the old portal. Still miss it.

That video brings back memories I didn't know I had...

I agree that missions should be brought back.

Yeah Missions was a much-needed feature for QoL and I'm sad they took it away.

And if the only problem is the Python3 framework, Laurie @KA you're a KA team member right? I can help port the old Missions board to Python3. I've had 6 years of coding experience with the framework, so I should know my way around things.

They're using Go, not Python 3. I think the reason that so many features were removed is because they wanted the bare minimum of features that'd make KA work. That doesn't really explain the removal of 5*10^5 / Helen Keller / Millionare / Ramanujan / Da Vinci though...

Yeah, they should have kept those, they should really bring those back...

I mean right now the largest EP badge you can get is Frederick Douglass which is 250,000 and Tesla which is 10M, and that's a huge gap

cwalsh1223 ‮BBB#‬ The courses page is in Go, yeah. The Missions page was in Python2 when it was around and they didn't want to try and convert in to Python3 just to keep it useable.

xyzyyxx I hear EP and my mind goes "Eternity Points" lol. Guess I'm just too used to the mechanics of my game.

LOL that's silly

Thats crazy

Personally, I am no longer convinced that Khan Academy cares, nor that most of the staff care beyond getting a paycheck.  When I report problems, it is usually way too difficult to get whomever responds to understand my problem report and actually test it in a way that makes sense.  I have been waiting over 4 months for Khan Academy to make a simple change to the transcript of one of the walkthroughs.
I think Evan Lewis probably cares, but is way overworked.

For my own mental health, I am going to try to take a break from dealing with the problems caused by Khan Academy not fixing mistakes and not making it easy for learners to actually learn.

JaniceHolz Yeah, you kinda have a point. I don't understand why it would take 4 months to roll out a small transcript fix. If I have to weigh in, something is really strange in the system. Where do they get the time to implement an entire levels system with its badges, a Course Mastery graphical UI, migrate their entire codebase from Python 2 to Go, and introduce 32 new avatars, when they've been stalling remaking ONE video for six years and possibly more (as you had noted in another thread), when transcripts take months to fix, and flagged inappropriate posts remain for over a week?

You noted that most of the staff probably don't care beyond getting a paycheck, but now that I think about it, it feels stranger even than that, because why would we be getting new features if that's true? Why would the badges 5*10^5, Helen Keller, Millionaire, Ramanujan, and Da Vinci be deleted when Frederick Douglass and Newton could be implemented just fine?

Fr. Whats the need of asking for help or giving suggestions if the KA team never checks?

I don't understand why Khan Academy is so dysfunctional.  I feel bad for all the students who are forced by their parents or teachers or schools to use it without proper support or a full main curriculum in the subject.

I tried for 10 months to help users of the 6th grade math course, and kept finding uncorrected mistakes that had been reported several months (or more) before, "corrected" mistakes that amount to a correction box that doesn't even show in full-screen mode, concepts taught out of order, inconsistent switching between multiplication symbols, and other content problems.
Then there's the frustration of being repeatedly accused of being a bot or AI, flagging new disrespectful or unhelpful comments only to have them go unreviewed for weeks or more, posting helpful Tips only to have them drowned out by people making generic "thanks" posts, and Khan Academy's search functions being next-to useless.

If this is world-class education, the standard should be a lot higher.

Yeah, it's pretty sad. Spam is rampant on the Questions and mistakes take so long to correct. It doesn't make sense tho because the KA team has time to add new content and features

Yeah, they should look into creating new content and features, but its not only about new features and content. They try their best to help the world and even with these few minor errors, they make it easier to learn a topic. But yes i agree, the bar needs to be set a bit higher for better and more efficient learning.

I clicked on the link to the vid, but I got a “this video is unavailable”? Did they take it down?

And although I only joined 10 weeks ago, I agree that there’s a _huge_ gap in the badges.
I honestly don’t understand what they’re doing. Updates that people hate, and taking away stuff that people love…I mean, whaaaaaaaa? Why?

I really hope that they bring back the old badges. They sound so good.

I got an email a couple of weeks ago about some high school chemistry video competition, and the prize was ENORMOUS!!! I think that it was like 200,000 something tuition with an additional few hundred for the class and something else.

I mean, if they have that kind of money to give away every year, why can’t they actually take care of their app by listening to what people are saying?

Bro, when a video is unavailable, it probably has a reason for it. The money they give to a child is for them to get to college. You wouldn't be complaining if you got the money. No matter if the app doesn't have special features, you dont have to buy a tutor when you got a world class one with a wide variety of courses. They are trying. Think of it in a different aspect. When has KA asked for money? They only have a button to click to donate a few dollars. Not only that, the money is going to children. As you told "huge amounts". If this were really that bad I dont think Elon Musk would've donated 6 million dollars. Rethink it.

But, yes there can be a few changes and they can check these pages once in a while for improvements.

I don't believe that KA is still set up to care.  I've tried for the last couple years to help them correct confusing mistakes in their 6th grade math course, and they usually do little to nothing.  I reported a caption mistake ("kilometers" rather than "kiloliters" in a video about volume) over a year ago, and there's no correction yet -- after an entire year.
Even when they put a correction box, it doesn't show if the learner is watching in full screen mode, as many learners apparently do.

12 years ago when I first joined, they might have been more responsive.  Now I think it's a giant organization that mostly exists to keep existing.

If this is a world-class learning platform, why do they teach a version of JavaScript that's so old that the code wouldn't even run on most other platforms?  Why do they use statistical terms such as "quartile" incorrectly?
Does it provide a world-class education when the Tips & Thanks section order is determined by user voting and the very few actual tips sink to the bottom while boring "thank yous" rise to the top?  When user voting means that incorrect Answers are shown first, even when better-qualified users have demonstrated in their Comments that the Answer is objectively wrong?

I’m sorry if you misunderstood me. I wasn’t saying that them giving away money was bad. And I’m pretty impressed with the fact that they don’t force anyone to pay. My point was that, since they are doing so well financially, why don’t they take more care of their website?

And I completely agree with you, Janice.

Also, I am one of those who watch all of the vids in full screen mode, and so unfortunately miss almost all of the correction boxes.
I am on a phone, so putting it on full screen really helps by enlarging everything, so I can actually see what he’s doing, but I’m sure that if I was on a laptop I would do that too, since I honestly find it a lot easier to focus when I’m just looking at what he’s writing, and not having the distractions around. If it’s something that I already 100% know, then I’ll go full screen, and then put it so it’s a little vid playing in the corner of my screen (I don’t know what it’s called, but I think that on YouTube it’s called miniplayer?), and then scroll the questions and answers. Other wise I just watch the vid in full screen, and then sometimes afterwards I’ll go down to the questions.
