What happens if my child or student's Khanmigo conversation gets flagged?

Frissítve:

Khan Academy uses moderation technology to detect inappropriate, harmful, or unsafe content in Khanmigo conversations. This system monitors both text messages and images to maintain a safe learning environment for all users.

When content is flagged, the system automatically sends both an email notification and an in-platform notification to the adult associated with the child's account. Notification recipients vary by account based on how a child or student accesses Khanmigo.

Who receives notification alerts?

If the child has received Khanmigo access through their parent:

  • The parent will receive the notification and email alert concerning the flag
  • Parents can also view all flagged conversations and images in their child’s chat history page

If the student has received Khanmigo through their school district:

  • If they're working on a Khanmigo assignment:
    • The teacher who assigned the work will receive the the moderation notification and email.
  • If they're not working on a Khanmigo assignment:
    • The primary teachers of all district-synced classes will receive the the moderation notification and email.
    • Co-teachers do not receive alerts
  • If a flag meets a certain severity threshold and the district has opted for administrator notifications:
    • Designated admins will also receive an email.
    • These admins can view flagged chats through links included in emails forwarded to them by teachers or parents.
    • While emails to administrators are clearly labeled when a serious issue is detected, all moderation alerts sent to teachers—regardless of severity—have the same format.

If the student has received Khanmigo through their school district, but also has a parent connected to their account:

  • Only the teacher (or administrator, if applicable) will receive the notification
  • However, the parent can still see flagged content through the child’s chat history

Important reminders:

  • About our moderation system: We continuously work to improve content detection accuracy, but no automated system is perfect.
  • About flagged images: To protect student privacy, we don't store uploaded images on our servers. When an image is flagged, you'll receive a detailed AI-generated description of the content rather than the actual image. This description provides more context than what appears in the student’s chat history.
