Update: Introducing bonus questions!

Is that the change that caused the weird fonts a few hours ago?  It would be great if Khan Academy had a place we could look to see if there were site issues - I thought it was a problem on my end, and closed down everything on my computer to reboot.  Even just a post about the temporary issue somewhere in the Support Community would help, and would only take someone 5 minutes or less to make.
Are there any plans to put up temporary notices like that when the website is having issues?

Addendum 4/24/2025:
I learned from someone official in KA that usually updates about major outages will appear in a bright blue a banner at the top of the site and also be posted on the status page. (There is no permanent link on the KA website to the status page.)  Maybe that did not happen this time because it was fixed within a couple hours and was rather minor (though confusing).

Personally, I wish they would take 2 minutes to at least update the status page, and that there were a permanent link on the KA website to the status page.

Cool feature, sounds very helpful. It's happened quite a lot that I get all the problems correct on a practice exercise, but on the very last problem, I get it wrong, and poof! now I have to redo the entire exercise all over again. In my opinion it does feel a little lenient to get 4 out of 5 correct and still be proficient. Maybe the bonus question could have some extra difficulty to balance it out.

Hello, love the new update but can I please not be prompted to keep going for the bonus question when it is simply not available for the specific exercise, it would make restarting a lot less annoying, please and thank you.

It's great and all but not all of us want a perfect grade, is this atleast skipable? (Sorry if it sounds rude, not intended) I have a question? Is there ever going to be a dark mode? I know to take breaks but it takes up time when I could be completing classes i missed, and after a while of looking at the white screen hurts my eyes.

OH MY GOODNESS! I'm so so happy you added this. As a homeschooled student, as well as a perfectionist, I would get so frustrated if I got the answer wrong on the last one! This is absolutely a need and I love it!! If I had this sooner I would've been a lot farther along, and would be less frustrated at error. Though I know failing is normal, getting the questions perfect without room for mistakes made it a lot less approachable.

For the unit tests, can we have the start over added if we miss a question? There aren't any bonus questions for them, so when I get 1 question wrong I have to intentionally fail the following question so I can start over.

Sounds like a good idea for when you miss a question at the end of the problem set, but if you have the bad luck to miss the first or second problem, then you still have the same pressure for the rest of the set, so nothing changes unless you miss towards the end. And forbidding students to restart after they miss the first problem? Kind of annoying, to be completely honest.

Yes I have been using this feature for 2 months now. It is great! I get proficient like I never even did.

I know that some like to quit and restart exercises. There can be benefit at times by doing this. However there are a lot of negatives. 

1. Khan Academy has a preset number of questions. The chances that a student encounters the same questions on a reattempt and has memorised the correct answer is more likely.

2. We want to encourage mastery and also a growth concept. I have one student who quit and reattempted an exercise 9 times until he got 100%. Being a perfectionist is harmful and we don't want to encourage 100% as the ultimate goal. Understanding should be the priority. How to best implement this, I don't know. If someone restarts, perhaps they need to check off a box with the reason why? Accidentally clicked on the wrong answer? Encourage them to watch a video?
3. A warning should flash up if students are going too fast or a reminder to try something more challenging? I have a Grade 6 student who levels and builds his weekly streak by doing Grade 3 exercises! His goal is to increase his streak. He celebrates madly when his streak increases and doesn't care how it was achieved. He also randomly guesses answers and it's not uncommon to level up 10 skills and down 20 skills in a course challenge. How to best address this I am not sure.

I am speaking as someone who is also focused on the skill mastery with an aim of levelling up. Is number 3 that much of an issue? (Aside from the guessing part)

I'm nearly a decade out of college and didn't actively use Khan Academy since highschool. I started up Khan Academy again to learn Statistics and a couple of months into it they introduced the levelling up system. I enjoy gamification and want to reach level 100 so I started to dive into the K-12 material, working my way up to AP courses.

I ended up finding reviewing the material to be significantly helpful. There was quite a bit I didn't realize I forgot, and there was also quite a few techniques I learned via KA that I wasn't taught in my schooling. I honestly feel more confident in my ability to learn and am far more interested in exploring all the coursework instead of just being fixated on a few courses.

Hi! Bonus question is a great feature but I'd love to see it extended to Mastery Challenges, Quizzes, and/or Unit Tests and Course Challenges too. Currently I get them in exercises focused on one specific skill.

Perhaps in mixed practice settings, the bonus question could cover what we missed earlier?
