Wait -- Missions Going Away?! A Plea for Re-Consideration.
I am super disappointed that Missions is going to go away! As an off-and-on user since last Summer, I had not really noticed the feature before a few days ago and only just decided to start using it. When I went looking for it today, I see it will be phased out in June!
I wonder why Khan Academy would get rid of such a useful feature. After reading a book called Ultralearnng, by Scott Young, I learned about several studies which have shown improvement in skill acquisition when learners test before taking on coursework form the beginning. This helps the learner know the appropriate areas to focus their energy, increasing efficiency through the ability to attack weak areas strategically, and most importantly, move on quickly from areas of proficiency. I assume the person or people who designed Missions did so based on these ideas, and it seems that Missions demonstrates the bigger picture of the course plan so much more clearly. This can help people develop their strategy!
As a person trying to get through algebra quickly (I already took it in college a long time ago), I find this feature invaluable. I can only assume low-usage of the feature by learners if Khan is deciding to phase it out. But if I could make a humble suggestion: Perhaps before getting rid of it, Khan can make it a more prominent feature on your website, or even try integrating it into the regular coursework process, starting with a more suggestive and enticing option for Missions testing before any course. Or, by doing a Missions test, you can earn more energy points! I think it is a GREAT feature. And if it turns out it is not popular with everyone, there is still a specific sub-set of users, especially aspiring ultra-learners who it will still be of great value to.
Thanks!!
