Why do my Activity Overview report and my student's progress report show different numbers of skills?
If you’re a teacher that regularly uses Khan Academy with your students and wants them to take ownership of their learning journey, you might ask them to count the green arrows they see on their Progress page.
If you do that, it’s possible that you also try to compare the number of green arrows your student sees on their end with the number of skills you see on your Activity Overview report.
Assuming that is your case, you may have noticed that those two numbers do not match— the number of green arrows and skills change on the student’s progress page is different from the number of skills leveled up on your Activity Overview report.
This is because the Activity Overview report shows the number of skills the student has leveled up. However, one important thing to keep in mind is that this metric is not the same that can be found on the student’s Progress report!
The Activity Overview report shows the number of skills that were leveled up; on the other hand, the student’s Progress report shows the number of times a skill’s (or skills’) level changed. While the Activity Overview report shows the total number of skills that the student has leveled up, the student’s Progress report will show the individual times in which the student has leveled up (or down) on the same skill and/or on different skills.
This difference is that it's possible to level up on the same skill 3 times; the student can go from Not Started → Attempted -> Familiar → Proficient → Mastered on the same skill. In this case, the student's progress report would show 3 level-ups, and the Activity Overview report would show only 1 skill because, ultimately, the student leveled up 3 times on 1 skill.
