How do Khan Academy's Mastery levels work?

Khan Academy’s mission is to offer a free, world-class education to anyone, anywhere. A cornerstone of our mission is mastery learning.
Our mastery learning system is surfaced to students, teachers, and school and district leaders.
Below are the Mastery levels that each student can achieve within Khan Academy:
Attempted
- Students got fewer than 70% of the questions correct on an exercise.
- Or students were at Not Started or Familiar and missed questions on this skill on a mixed-skill assessment.
Familiar
- Students completed an exercise with 70%-99% of the questions correct.
- Or students were at Attempted or Not Started and correctly answered questions on this skill on a mixed-skill assessment.
- Or students were at Proficient and missed questions on this skill.
Proficient
- Students completed an exercise with 100% of the questions correct.
- Or, students were already at the Familiar and correctly answered questions on this skill on a mixed-skill assessment.
- Or students were at Mastered and missed questions on this skill.
Mastered
- Students were already at the Proficient and correctly answered questions on this skill on a mixed-skill assessment.
Not Started
- Students haven’t worked on this skill yet.
