What do interim assessments look like?

Here is a quick look at what students will see and do during an assessment, so you can help set expectations before test day.

Testing flows

  • Students see one question at a time and cannot go back to a previous question once they've moved on.
  • Some questions require a single response; others require multiple parts, and students must complete each one before moving on.
  • If a student answers in under 5 seconds, they'll see a pop-up asking them to slow down.
  • Once started, students have up to 14 days (or until the testing window closes, whichever comes first) to finish.
  • After finishing, students see a closing page with a link to a short feedback survey.

Question types students may see

  • Multiple Choice

Learners are presented with a prompt and a fixed set of response options in list form, and they can select one option.

  • Drop-Down

Similar to Multiple Choice, learners are presented with a prompt and a fixed set of response options from a drop-down menu, and they can select one option.

  • Expression (Math Only)

Learners are presented with a prompt and respond in the form of a math expression in a text box.

  • Numeric Input (Math Only)

Learners are presented with a prompt and will respond by entering a number in a text box.

  • Interactive Graph (Math Only)

Learners are presented with a prompt and elements in a Cartesian coordinate space (a graph). They can respond by manipulating elements in the graph. 

Students must manipulate the graph in some way before they can submit a response.

  • Explain Your Thinking (EYT)

Learners are presented with a two-part question. After answering the first part, which can use any of the above item types, Khanductor will initiate a conversation for the learner to elaborate on their understanding in order to better show what they know. 

Note that the conversation will not be graded during the pilot phase.

  • Short Response

Learners are presented with a prompt that requires a written response. Note that this item type will not be graded during the pilot phase.
