How do I create and assign a Writing Coach assignment?

Writing Coach makes it easy to create essay assignments, customize prompts, and assign them to your students.

How you create an assignment depends on whether you're using Khan Academy Classroom (KAC) or the standalone Writing Coach site.

Choose the section below that matches how you're using Writing Coach.

 

Create an assignment in Khan Academy Reimagined

Step 1: Open the Writing Coach assignment library

Step 2: Choose an assignment

Browse the assignment library to find an essay that meets your instructional goals.

You can:

  • Browse by subject, grade level, or essay type.
  • Search for specific topics.
  • Preview essay templates before assigning them.
  • View sample essays.

You can also choose to:

  • Assign an existing template.
  • Customize an existing template.
  • Create a new assignment from scratch.

 

Step 3: Customize your assignment

When creating or editing an assignment, you'll configure details such as:

  • Assignment title
  • Assignment type
  • Grade level
  • Essay type
  • Target word count
  • Essay prompt and instructions
  • Students
  • Start date
  • Due date

Writing Coach supports two assignment types:

Full essay-writing experience

Students complete the entire writing process, including:

  • Understand the assignment
  • Create an outline
  • Write a first draft
  • Complete the completeness check
  • Revise the essay

Essay feedback and revision

Students begin with an existing draft and use Writing Coach to receive guided feedback and revise their work.

Step 4: Assign the essay

Once you've finished configuring the assignment, create it.

The assignment is automatically added to your students' learning queues.

Students don't need a separate assignment link or class code.

 

Step 5: Manage your assignments

After creating an assignment, you can manage it from the Assignments page.

Available options may include:

  • Edit
  • Share
  • Preview
  • Add students
  • Make a copy
  • Delete

Selecting Preview lets you experience the assignment from a student's perspective before assigning it.

 

Step 6: Review student progress

To review student work, open a Writing Coach assignment from the Assignments page or from Reports > Assignments.

Assignment reports include information such as:

  • Progress status
  • Last updated
  • Time spent
  • Current word count
  • And more.

What happens after I assign an essay?

Once students begin working, Writing Coach guides them through five stages:

  1. Understand the assignment
  2. Create an outline
  3. Write a first draft
  4. Complete the completeness check
  5. Revise the essay
