How do I use the Activity, Skills, and Mastery tabs on the Activity overview report?

Updated

Khan Academy offers teachers insight to track their students' work on both assigned and unassigned content through a variety of reports. This article will give you an in-depth guide to viewing and understanding the data shown on one of these reporting options: the Activity overview report.

To start, let's answer: "What is the Activity overview report?"

The Activity overview is a unique report, as it offers teachers the ability to analyze data from all work their students have completed on Khan Academy, whether they have assigned it to them or not. This can be helpful if your students are working more independently, or are in other classes that are covering similar material.

There are 3 separate tabs on the Activity overview for teachers to view data on: the Activity tab, the Skills tab, and the Mastery tab. These different tabs let teachers view and analyze the dataset that is most important to them. Below, we will go over what data is included on the 3 tabs and some technical tricks to keep in mind when analyzing that data.

Next, let's answer, "How do I access the Activity overview report?"

To view the Activity Overview report, please log into your Khan Academy account, select a class from your Teacher Dashboard, and click the "Activity overview" link on the left menu bar.

Next, we will dive into the different tabs on the Activity overview report:

1. Activity tab:

The Activity tab shows the students in a particular class, the total minutes they’ve spent learning, and how many skills they have worked on, leveled up on, and reached the Proficient Mastered level.

Notable features of the Activity tab:

  • "Only show my class's courses" check box: select this if you want to only see the data about the courses you have added to this specific class. Un-select this if you would like to see the student's work from all of Khan Academy
  • When you hover over the column titles, a tooltip appears and explains more about the metrics.
  • Reverse the sorting order from high-low to low-high by clicking on the “Total” “Average” or “Proficiency” column titles
  • Click the person icon next to a student's name to be taken to their Individual Student Report with more information about how they have spent their time on Khan Academy.

2. Skills tab:

The Skills tab shows the different skills that are included in a Course, and what Mastery levels the students in your class are at for those particular skills.

Notable features of the Skills tab:

  • Customizable filters: select which Course, Unit, or Mastery Level you would like displayed.
  • "Only show assigned skills" check box: Select this if you want to only see the data about the content you have assigned to your students through a Course Mastery Goal, Unit Mastery Goal, or Assignment. Un-select this if you would like to see the student's work from all of Khan Academy, whether you assigned it to them or not.
  • The ? symbol to the right of the Mastery Levels legend shows more information about how the Khan Academy Mastery levels are calculated.
  • Click the > symbol next to the unit to expand the data to show data for the specific skills in that unit.
  • Click the skill name or the colored Mastery chart next to the skill name to see where your students fall in the Mastery level for that skill.
  • The "Expand all" and "Collapse all" links open and close all the skills in the unit, and can help save time navigating through the report.
  • The "View Exercise" link shows you a preview of what the exercise would be if you clicked the "Assign this skill" button.
  • Click on a student's name to be taken to their Individual Student Report with more information about how they have spent their time at Khan Academy.

  • The Median Mastery level for all the students in your class for the selected course and the units in that course
