How do I create Unit Missions for my students?

Updated

Mastery-based practice on the reimagined Khan Academy focuses on Unit MissionsUnit Missions include all the practice items in a single unit in a course. They are great for teachers who want to set up one assignment to monitor their students' Mastery progress as they work through the unit.

Here are some quick tips about Unit Missions:

  • Once the student gets to Proficient or Mastered in all of the skills in the unit, the Unit Mission assignment will be marked as complete!
  • If you assign more than one Unit Mission, we highly recommend spacing out the Unit Missions to where their due dates are at least 2 weeks apart.
  • If you were previously using Course Mastery goals, here is a resource on how to replace them with Unit Missions

Here's how you can create Unit Missions:

  1. Select "Create an assignment" from your Teacher Dashboard or Class Overview

  2. Select which course you'd like to assign from
  3. Select which unit(s) you would like your students to work on. You can click "Select all" if you'd like your students to work on the entire course.
  4. Optional: Drag and drop the units into the desired cadence you'd like your students to follow
  5. Set due dates for each unit (don't worry, you can adjust these later if needed!)
NOTE: We highly recommend spacing out the Unit Missions to where their due dates are at least 2 weeks apart!
  6. Optional: add a Course Challenge + additional classes that you'd like to see receive these assignments
  7. Click "Assign Unit Mission"

Reporting options for Unit Missions:

  1. The "Assignments" report to see student Mastery progress percentages at the unit level
    • Click "Reports" on the left-hand side window
    • Click "Assignments"
    • Click on the title of the Unit Mission assignment
    • This will open up a chart that lists your students' Mastery percentage for that unit
  2. You can also view Mastery progress data at the unit level on the "Assignments" tab.
    • Click "Assignments" from the left-hand menu
    • Click on a Unit Mission assignment
    • Click "Student summary"
    • This will show when students completed the Unit Mission, how many content items in the Unit Mission they have completed, and the number of Skills Proficient (or Mastered) each student has.

We hope this article helped you understand how Unit Missions work!
