How do I replace Course Mastery Goals in the Khan Academy reimagined experience?

Updated

In the reimagined Khan Academy, Mastery-based practice is organized through Unit Missions rather than Course Mastery Goals. Unit Missions show student progress to teachers in smaller chunks, making it easier to spot specific gaps and see exactly where students need support.

This article will cover how to adjust your classroom routines accordingly now that Course Mastery Goals are no longer available, and answer some FAQs about this change.

What happens to existing Course Mastery Goals?

  • Course Mastery Goals are the only assignment type that do not transfer to the new reimagined Khan Academy experience.

What should I do if I was using Course Mastery Goals?

  • Assign all unit missions in the course instead
    • To do this:
      1. Select "Create an assignment" from your Teacher Dashboard or Class Overview

      2. Select which course you'd like to assign from
      3. Click "Select all" on the Unit Missions tab
      4. Optional: Drag and drop the units into the desired cadence you'd like your students to follow
      5. Set due dates for each unit (don't worry, you can adjust these later if needed!)
      6. Optional: add a Course Challenge + additional classes you'd like to receive these assignments
      7. Click "Assign Unit Missions"

Will students lose their progress?

  • Nope! Existing student progress remains on their accounts.
  • When you assign all the corresponding Unit Missions, any previous work students completed on that content will be reflected on your teacher reports

Speaking of reports, what reports should I use to view Mastery progress?

  • While the Course Mastery report (the purple bar graph report) has been deprecated, you will be able to see progress at the unit level rather.
  • Once you assign the Unit Missions, use the "Assignments" report to see student Mastery progress percentages at the unit level
    • To do this:
      1. Click "Reports" on the lefthand side window
      2. Click "Assignments"
      3. Click on the title of the Unit Mission assignment
      4. This will open up a chart which lists your students' Mastery percentage for that unit
  • You can also view Mastery progress data at the unit level on the "Assignments" tab.
    • To do this:
      1. Click "Assignments" from the lefthand menu
      2. Click on a Unit Mission assignment
      3. Click "Student summary"
      4. This will show when students completed the Unit Mission, how many content items in the Unit Mission they have completed, and the number of Skills to proficient (or Mastered) each student has.

We hope this article was helpful in understanding how to transition your classroom routines to Unit Missions rather than Course Mastery Goals!
