How do I create Course or Unit Mastery Goals for my students?
What is a Course Mastery Goal?
A Course Mastery goal is a student learning target aimed at achieving proficiency in an entire Khan Academy course across a school year. This long-term goal encourages consistent progress and deep understanding of the content.
What is a Unit Mastery Goal?
Unit Mastery goals are short-term goals aimed at achieving Mastery of a single unit. These goals are designed to align with current instruction and to promote understanding of the unit's content. Here are the 8 steps to create a Mastery Goal from your Teacher Dashboard:
Step 1: Log into your Khan Academy account. Click your name in the top right-hand corner, then select the “Teacher Dashboard” from the dropdown list.
Step 2: Select which class you would like to make a Mastery Goal for.
Step 3: On the left-hand menu bar, click the “Assign” option, which is located below the “Mastery Goals” section.
Step 4: Select the course for which you want to create a Mastery goal.
Please note: If you don’t see the course for which you wish to assign a goal, click the “Edit courses” button at the bottom of the first column to add the course to your class.
Also please note: If your desired course is not listed here, skip to this section: Assigning them while viewing the content item itself
Step 5: From the “Select content” section, click which type of Mastery Goal you would like to assign: Course Mastery or Unit Mastery
If you select the Unit mastery option, you can choose one or multiple units to assign Unit Mastery goals for at once.
Step 6: Select a due date for your Mastery goal(s).
- Please note: For a Course Mastery Goal, we recommend setting the due date about 9 months from the date that the goal is created, but please adjust it to what best fits your students’ needs.
- If you are creating multiple Unit Mastery Goals, you can choose separate due dates for each of them, based on the speed your students are working.
- You can always go back and edit the due dates for the Mastery Goals as well by clicking the "Progress" option on the lefthand sidebar. This article has more information about how to edit Mastery Goals.
Step 7: Optional next step: Editing which students are receiving the goal. You can edit the students that are receiving the goal by selecting the blue “edit” button in the bottom right corner of the screen.
-
- Please note: If you have students join your class after you have created the Mastery Goal, they will not automatically be assigned it. If this is the case, we recommend editing existing Mastery Goals to include new students. This article has more information about how to add new students to existing Mastery Goals.
Step 8: Click “Create course goal” or "Create unit goal(s)" button at the bottom of the screen.
