I personally feel that this update is taking a not insignificant step in a direction, and not necessarily a good one. My family has used this site for homeschooling for around 5 years now, and we've had an amazing experience with the tools offered by the site. They are (or were, I suppose) easy to navigate and understand. This update really caught me off guard, and it honestly scares me. A lot of sites have been making this jump toward "innovation" or "reimagination" or whatever you want to call it, but at its core, it is essentially just "Rub some AI on it and that will fix all of the problems!" I understand the need for Khan Academy to keep up with its competitors, and that some people might not find the original dashboard approach engaging enough, but this is too far. I had accumulated a lot of badges that I was rather fond of, and I feel like this is just burning down 5 years of my work, just for some "engagement". The people who worked on this update have probably been doing so for more than a year, and this isn't really my place to tell a bunch of people who know what they're doing that I know better than them, but I just felt that I needed to voice my feelings on this update.

Very frustrated with this update. My kids keep getting redirected to a classroom website. They are not able to go to their learner dashboard. I am not able to access the teacher dashboard or my settings. They both redirect to a website asking me to put in my classroom code.

Hi, I have the opposite problem of not being able to opt-in to see what it's like -- and I'm a teacher-enabled user with a learner in a class, and in a class as learner-teacher myself. Would like to know what I must to do actually see the new view, while the guide has helpful instructions for opting out of it permanently.

         I'm not sure how to opt-in because it gave me no warning or notice (not even an Email). The site updated itself and forced it on me Monday morning. I appreciate that there are instructions for opting out of the update, but I cannot follow them, because they essentially are telling me to delete all of my assignment data, to quote the post about opting out, "all of your assignment data and grades will be deleted." That is years of hard work, which I am not willing to vaporize just to go back to something that I already had a week ago. Have you tried restarting the site/device? Other than that, I can't offer much tech help. (And frankly as a learner, I HIGHLY disapprove of this new update, and I think you should have a chat with your students about the switch before you do this because they may be attached to their badges and avatars. The comment feature is also removed, which has severely limited my tools for asking questions from the wealth of 13 years of human knowledge and questions to just Khanmigo. This caused major ripples in my environment.)

Some navigation functionality with the new update has either been diminished or completely removed. One example of this is the absence of the sidebar, which was helpful for navigating through units, lessons, and lesson content. Now accessing any quiz, exercise, or challenge leaves the user stranded inside, and the only way to leave is for the user to be sent back to the course selection page. As this seems to not be a completely finished "reimagination", it would be awesome to be able to switch back to the previous version of the website, at least until the new version regains all of the functionality. I am not one to critique this website as it has served very useful to me as a learner, but this update did not feel like it elevated the user experience, as it is in its current state. Prompt action would be highly appreciated!

Are our past coding projects even able to be accessed anymore with this update? I cant find anything as easily as i used to with this update, and clicking on my proflle just redirects back to this new version. This update is really not what i expected to find on a random tuesday while trying to look at my old projects

I know that I am in no position to influence what direction Khan goes in, but I just wanted to give my two cents as a longtime user of Khan. The older interface of Khan Academy served me and millions of other users very well. They were very easy to navigate and understand, and changing the interface in my opinion is completely unwarranted. It simply forces tens, if not hundreds of millions of users to completely relearn the entire UI. And for what? A more "streamlined" learning experience? The previous experience was already streamlined. At the top you could see your entire course, and at a glance you could see exactly what you needed to work on. If you just needed a quick number there was also one, right at the top. See? Already well-designed. The new UI looks infantile as well. Especially the hexagon thing with eyes... I'm not quite sure what it is, but it looks like it was designed for 5-year-olds attached to an iPad. For them it might look friendly, but for everyone else it degrades the experience. The removal of badges, avatars, and energy points especially broke me. Learners around the world cherish these things, that they worked so hard for, and to take that away just for a new experience only serves to sour it for them. And it's not just me; the response to this update, from people who have commented and voted on this post, is overwhelmingly negative. It's not really my place to tell people who (hopefully) know what they're doing to say that I know better than them, but I really needed to voice my concerns on this.

P.S. I enabled teacher mode just to test out the new UI, but now when I try to open settings, it redirects me to the "Welcome to Khan Academy" message. When I try to press "Continue", though, it won't let me continue, saying "There was an error during activation. Please try again." Could you please disable teacher mode on my account manually?

I had been a coach to 2 users a few years ago, and now I'm locked in Teacher/Coach mode.  I tried to follow the instructions to uncheck Teacher/Coach, but that option remains checked and grayed out even though I removed all the users from my only class, deleted the class, and have always had my homepage set to Learner.

I specifically asked last week what criteria would force someone into the new experience, and being a coach with a class was never mentioned.  Not once that I can see anywhere.

This is incredibly frustrating.  Why can't KA do better?

I want to echo what others have already shared regarding the wonderful ways your website was serving students and teachers prior to this update.

I'd like to emphasize that showing the mastery percentages along with the row of Attempted (Red), Familiar (Orange), Proficient (Purple), and Mastered (Crown) exercises for the Units and Courses was so useful for me and my students. It provided students with a snapshot of their demonstrated mastery in a beautifully succinct manner. The data allowed me to have an open dialogue with my students about their current understanding, helped students visualize their goals for the upcoming week, and allowed them to keep track of their progress over time. 

Is there any way we can reincorporate that feature into the Units and Courses again? 

I have a few issues:

1) when I now go to a course, there is no indication of my past progress, so I don't know where I should start from. It used to be that completed content was ticked and underlined, but not anymore. If I follow my assignments I just get quiz after quiz with not way to access lesson content (no sidebar anymore)

2) since there is no sidebar showing the present lesson and unit content, when I get to a quiz where I have already mastered the material, and I would usually skip to the next lesson, now it's a deadend, or I have to go through the quiz anyway.

3) Previously completed assignments where I have 98% master, now seem to be highlighted as incomplete overdue assignments.

4) The weird little animated characters! Seriously? I find it distracting, childish, unhelpful..... Basic Cognitive Load Theory tells us to not overload the learner with unnecessary visuals. Can we opt out of them please?

5) Actually, can we opt out of this new design and just go back to the old one?

Is there a way to opt out of this update? The link above is broken.

Switching back to the previous experience

If you're an independent learner who wants to return to the previous experience, we have a temporary workaround:

This will take you to the “classic” experience. From there, you will be able to see/work on your courses, explore our library, view your projects etc.

NOTE: This isn’t a perfect workaround however. If you click on Settings or on any class titles, it will take you to the Reimagined experience. To get back, visit the URL above.

They're still available, although some have changed in the reimagined experience.

• Energy Points are now Gems.
• Avatars have been replaced with Khanmigo customization.

Adding my voice to the multitude a la "Horton Hears a Who" style... My teenage learners heartily dislike the 'new' KA, and asked for the old back, complete with their little avatars, and showing the % of course complete for easy reference... but the link is broken. As a busy working + home educating mom, I'm frustrated that this new change complicates what was a pretty streamlined setup for us. While I understand trying new things and updating... we'd love love love if you fixed the link, so those of us who like the old way can return to it!!

Edit: I now see the post from a mod attempting to help, so we'll try that, fingers crossed it helps... but my learners are still super bummed that their preferred buddies are gone, and they only get a "stupid hexagon". 

Thank you for the workaround link. That is hugely helpful, but as a teacher whose been using Khan Academy for the past 15 years and convinced two different private independent schools to shift our curriculum and use KA as our textbook/workbook my inability: 

(a) to see student mastery percentages quickly is about five steps back. This data helped me norm the whole class quickly by using statistical data. The median and range were hugely useful tools that helped those at the bottom of the class better understand whether they should stay in that track or move to an accelerated or more foundational math class over time. This idea of student agency based on anonymous continuous data was hugely helpful.

(b) to see student mistakes quickly aggregated on one assignment is going to make my life so much harder to create paper quizzes. It was wonderful for the past 7 or so years, to tell the students to focus on their mistakes because that is how I made assessments, pulling from the most common mistakes. Thereby if everyone focused on their own mistakes then they would have a better chance of knowing what was on the actual quiz because they would be prepared for it. I've noodled around for the last fifteen minutes and have no idea to find aggregate mistakes on a given assignment.

----- I can only imagine what an ordeal rolling these upgrades back must be, but I can continue to explain the other losses at this point. --- And I was one of those folks that appreciated you taking student impact and moving away from 5 questions correct in a row before Khan awarded you success. You also rebuilt restarts and bonus questions well with iteration. This change is a huge step backwards as I prep classes and I pray that you leave the international schools in the old system as they were just a few days ago. Funny to think folks in the states will use a VPN to get the other system. ---- 

Again this is coming from a teacher that has implemented Khan into every course I've taught for the past 15 years, and across two schools and now as a school head who has implemented it in every class from Grades 6 - 12, please please please, hold off. --- It looks like the purpose of the new model is a hope to entice some new students to engage with KA, but expert students and faculty who've been using it for years are being neglected.

Please fix the link in the article above as cwalsh indicated in the comment above mine.  Next time, would you be willing to check all your links after you submit or edit your post?  It's frustrating that the link didn't work, when so many of us are already frustrated that we were dumped into the new interface when we shouldn't have been.

You "convinced two different private independent schools to shift our curriculum and use KA as our textbook/workbook"?  I thought KA was very clear that none of the KA courses is a complete curriculum for that subject.  I have no formal training in education, but I've done hundreds of hours of math tutoring, and I don't think the KA math courses are suitable as a whole curriculum -- for example, there's no glossary and not nearly enough practice problems, IMO.
