It sort of depends on the course and level of difficulty of the questions, but generally it would take 4+ attempts to start getting duplicate questions on quizzes. It could be more or less than that though, depending on how easy it is to write questions for the course and the popularity of the course.

For SPED students, the above method actually works quite well! Since the site doesn't allow you to set a limit on the attempts, you can set your own policy for different students (say, 3 attempts for SPED students) and then use the assignment report to verify that the SPED students used no more than 3 attempts and the rest of the students only used 1 attempt.

I'm not a teacher and don't use KA in a classroom, but based on my experience I've seen a lot of teachers that use Course Mastery, some in combination with the regular assignments. Whether or not course mastery on its own will work for you will likely depend on your state and school district, as expectations and grading procedures can vary. For teachers that do use course mastery, I've seen many that submit grades based on either total learning minutes, the number of skills mastered, or the mastery % progress. i.e. You can do things like require students to spend X minutes a week working on their mastery goal, master X skills in the week, or increase their mastery percentage by X%.

Another question: I noticed my 8th grader were working on 1st grade math skills, and mastering/leveling up, skewing reports. Is there a way to block this when working on Course Mastery?

Hmmm, that's definitely a new one! If they're working on 1st grade instead of 8th grade, that shouldn't have much (if any) effect on their mastery progress in the 8th grade course or for their 8th grade mastery goal.

The mastery goals are based on the skills mastered within the assigned course, so if they master an easy skill in the 1st grade course this won't increase their 8th grade mastery goal unless that skill also happens to appear in the 8th grade course (which is highly unlikely). The number of minutes practiced have no effect on the Mastery Goal.

As far as activity reports go, if they're working on the 1st grade course, that could definitely skew your Activity Overview report by showing a higher number of minutes/skills mastered than what they actually spent in the 8th grade course. I'm afraid there's not a way to filter the activity minutes by course for an entire class (this is on our wishlist!), but there are a few other things you could try:

• From Course Mastery --> Progress you can view each student's Mastery Percentage within a specific course. This can help you to monitor that their percentage is increasing every day, week, etc. You can't see changes over a period of time, but a quick screenshot at the start of the week and a comparison later on should allow you to see how much their Mastery Percentage has changed by.
• If it's only a few students who are doing this, you can look at their individual activity reports to filter by only activity within courses with active mastery goals. From the Activity Overview tab, click on a specific student's name to view their report. Then change "All content" to "Course mastery goals". So for a particular student, you could see only the things they've done within the 8th grade course.
