4th Grade: Order Equiv Fractions & Comparing Fractions. Order the Concepts should be in.
I needed to make this post about Fractions in 4th Grade the 4th Grade Unit: Equivalent fractions and comparing fractions and in the Fractions Unit of the Arithmetic Section.
I found myself going around in circles and getting really confused about this Unit, until i finally figured out what order i should learn everything in. Firstly you should probably put more stuff into the 4th Grade Unit, at least put in Simplifying Fractions, Compare fractions with the same numerator or denominator and Mixed Fractions. Most of the stuff is put into the Arithmetic Section where at first i didn't know the rest of the stuff was in there which i know i'll regularly check now just in case.
Then also stuff for Cross Multiplication, because you need that for Mixed Fractions if the Denominators of the Proper Fractions in Mixed Fractions don't share a Least Common Multiple when you're Comparing an Improper Fraction to a Mixed Fraction, and also for Comparing Fractions.
The order the Concepts should be in is:
Equivalent Fractions
Reducing Fractions
Equivalent Fractions Missing Numbers
Common Denominators
Adding Fractions (i found myself needing to learn about Making Denominators The Same through learning Adding Fractions so might as well learn it to understand that).
Simplifying Fractions
Cross Multiplication
Comparing Fractions Greater or Less Than (Cross Multiplication i find good for this too).
Compare & Order Fractions
Mixed Numbers: Improper into Mixed Fractions & Mixed into Improper Fractions.
Subtracting Fractions
Multiply Fractions
Dividing Fractions.
I find this makes the most sense to learn it all in this order after i just figured out i needed Cross Multiplication for Mixed Fractions but i need all the other stuff before it too in order to then understand Mixed Fractions so i rearranged stuff in my Notes in that order and Mixed Fractions is the last thing before i ever move onto the next stuff. It's taken me longer than i'd hoped to learn more concepts because i was so confused.
What do you think? Would it be a good idea to change the order of the concepts?.
