These revisions are designed to strengthen conceptual understanding, improve instructional support, and better align the courses to the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum.
Revised courses include:
- 6th grade Illustrative Math - aligned
- 7th grade Illustrative Math - aligned
- 8th grade Illustrative Math - aligned
- Algebra 1 I Illustrative Math - aligned
- Integrated Math 1 Illustrative Math - aligned
This update is part of Khan Academy’s 2026 back-to-school content rollout. You can view the full 2026 Back To School course overview here.
What’s changing?
Across these courses, students and teachers may notice:
- new and revised instructional content
- additional guided support and scaffolding
- stronger connections between visual models, graphs, tables, and equations
- expanded real-world applications and practice opportunities
- improved alignment to Illustrative Mathematics scope and sequence
Many lessons and exercises have been updated to better support conceptual understanding and mathematical reasoning.
Highlights across the revised courses
More support for conceptual understanding
The updated courses place a stronger emphasis on helping students understand why math works, not just how to solve problems.
Students will see:
- more visual models and representations
- stronger connections between concepts
- additional opportunities for guided practice and reasoning
Expanded instructional support
Many exercises now include:
- improved scaffolding
- additional hints and instructional guidance
- more detailed alignment to specific learning goals
These updates are intended to help students build confidence while working through challenging concepts independently or in the classroom.
Stronger alignment to Illustrative Mathematics
The revised courses are more closely aligned to the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum and learning progression.
Teachers may notice:
- improved unit-to-unit alignment
- more consistent sequencing of concepts
- expanded support for classroom integration and differentiated instruction
Will this affect mastery progress?
Some users may notice changes to course mastery percentages as revised and additional exercises are introduced.
These updates do not remove previously completed work or accomplishments.
This article will be updated with more specific information about mastery percentage changes once it becomes available.
Why are these changes being made?
These revisions are intended to make Khan Academy’s Illustrative Math-aligned courses more effective, more supportive, and easier to use alongside classroom instruction.
The updated content is designed to help students:
- build deeper conceptual understanding
- connect mathematical ideas across topics
- apply math in more meaningful real-world contexts
At the same time, the revisions provide teachers with stronger instructional alignment and additional support resources for classroom use.
