Simplifying Square Roots
I simply cannot grasp the concept. After almost 3 hours I still cannot get a single one right. What am I missing?
Even after watching the video twice and looking at other sources it makes no sense.

Hello scorpmann44!
I can understand your situation, let me work you through my understanding and steps I have lean't so far,
A square root of a number is one of two equal factors of the number, which is a radical sign, , it's used to indicate a positive square root, every positive number has a positive square root and a negative square root, as a negative number like "-7" has no real square root because the square of a number cannot be negative. I will give you 3 examples and explain, to help you understand more......
Examples:
example 1: find the square root of 36? 36, oviously indicates the positive square root of 36 . therefore 6 * 6 is 36 , then 36 = 6, as you have learnt perfect squares .
example 2: find the square root -64? -64 indicates the negative square root of -64, and therefore 8*8 is 64, -64 = -8.
-- now, to estimate the sqaure root, the square root of a perfect square is an integer, you can estimate the square root of a number that is not a perfect square.--
example 3: estimate 69 to its nearest whole number, first of all, list some perfect squares and look for the whole numbers near 69 , like: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, ... , observe that 69 lies between the perfect squares 64 and 81 , that is, 64 < 69 < 81 , now find the square root of each number, 64 < 69 < 81 & 8 < 69 < 9 , so, therefore, 69 is between 8 and 9 , so since 69 is much closer to 64 than to 81 , the best whole number estimate is for 69 is 8 ...
if you use these three examples carefully and master your root, sign, and to estimate, I bet you will understand and never forget!
Hopefully this was helpful, :)
-Best Regards!
~Jessica.
