Math no longer usable for me on an iPad

I was sorely disappointed to lose the handwriting recognition, because the keyboard for entering math answers takes far, far longer to enter in my response. But is there no way to see my work in the virtual scratch area while using the math keyboard? Because if not it means I can't use the app unless I'm sitting at a desk with a separate pad of paper and a separate pen, which for reasons I'd rather not go into, isn't really feasible most of the time. I used to be able to use the app and work on math problems on my iPad. Now I can't because I made the mistake of upgrading the app and there's no way to go back.

I'm heartbroken to lose my Khan math courses.
