Update: Restart the practice activity you’re working on— introducing the “Start over” link!

It helps a lot but i am still on a coarse challenge and i got the second problem wrong. I really need it on the coarse challenge.

This is a nice feature for when I make a silly mistake, but it also can easily cause a lot of frustration. I've been most of the way through tests & mistakenly click on Start Over instead of a button next to it. The "Start Over" button, at least in unit tests, is placed directly next to the enable / disable drawing button which makes it too easily to click by accident when intending to enable / disable drawing mode. This could be easily avoided if a Confirm Start Over menu pops up after clicking the button, if the Start Over button was moved away from other buttons frequently used, or if the Start Over option was hidden in a drop down menu.

Is this also or the SAT practices?

This is good for some, awful for others. Instead of a global  "Start over", it should be made an option for teachers to turn on/off.

Either give teachers the control to turn this on/off, or get rid of it.

I am going to agree with Russell Byer above.  Please, please give teachers the option to turn off the Start Over key.  This feature has been detrimental to my students' learning.  They abuse the use of this key, even after being warned to please not use it.  They now do not ask for help when they are not understanding.  I allow try it agains, but they need to finish the actual assignment, even if they make mistakes.  They know not to just input random answers.  I am trying to teach them that it is okay to make an error.  When you make an error and analyze it, you learn from that mistake, and it helps you learn.  Maybe I feel this way, because I teach math.  I'm not sure if this opinion may vary by subject matter taught.  I don't think it is useful when you have students clicking on start over  key15 times, 42 times!  Please please give the teacher the ability to disable that feature.  

I have the opposite problem as a teacher. I am wishing we had the start over option for the Course Challenge. I have a student who thought she knew 6th grade math. She started the Course Challenge and realized she didn't know her 6th grade math. She stopped the Course Challenge and went to work on 6th grade math. She has been working SO hard on her 6th grade math and has just about completed it. However, when she goes back to the Course Challenge and completes it, she has already missed enough problems that even though she will probably get all the other questions correct, when she finishes the current course challenge, it will bump her percentages down and she will have to go back and re-do lessons she already knows before she can take the Course Challenge again and bump herself up again. Any suggestions or ideas before the Course Challenge start over feature is available ?

We are working on adding the confirmation button to the desktop web experience, as well as adding the Start Over link to Course Challenges. Thank you for your patience as we do so! Please, Please, Please make the Start Over an option to "turn OFF" for when teachers assign it to their students.

The problem with the solution is the students still "game it". They just go through it once, get all the answers, then redo the same set of questions.

This is exactly what they do with the "Start Over" feature, they start an assignment, get the answer click start over, and repeat until they have all the answers to the very small set of questions then put all the answers into the exercise, quiz, etc... 

This need to change. Please, please, please, eliminate the "Start-Over".

OR add 1000000s of more questions to the bank so that it is impossible to "game the system". The code could be written to generate the question ad hoc instead of saving it to a database.

I also wanted to remind you that any assigned exercise with the same question set for all students does not have the Start Over link option. Grace I hope you see this message. Thank you for adding this feature to the mobile apps. I have some questions about it before I begin using it.

1. Is it available in exercises/problems in courses that aren't set up for mastery? In particular, I am interested in Differential Equations (not to be confused with Differential Calculus).

2. Is it currently only available for practice exercises/problems, or is it currently also available for Unit tests? I am guessing that it is not currently available for Course Challenges based on something you said in the message in which you announced its availability for the mobile apps.

3. As an adult learner, I hope you will keep this feature's full functionality for those in this category and not require a teacher to have to enable it for us, in response to the request by some teacher's to be able to turn it on or off.

Thanks again for making this feature available. The lack of this feature was one of multiple reasons I stopped using Khan Academy more than a year ago. While some of the other reasons may still be valid, I look forward to trying Khan again and see how it works out for me.

1. I just checked and the Start Over link is available on the Differential Equations course which isn't set up for Mastery yet. It is available on the web and in-app experiences. Yay! 

2. The start over link is available on Exercises, Quizzes and Unit Tests. It is not available on the Course Challenge yet, or when a teacher assigns the content items to their students with the "Same set of questions for all students" option. 

3. Thank you for your suggestion and feedback about this! I appreciate hearing your perspective as an adult learner and have shared it with the product team.

I know my comment probably won't account for much, but I'm finding the course challenges demoralizing. I'm actually being conditioned to be SCARED of taking them. I have to get an A (90%) on course challenges due to my school's criteria, and I have broken down in tears many times because of the course challenge. I can get a maximum of three incorrect before failing, so if I'm halfway through and get those three wrong, I have to continue with the test even though it's totally fruitless. Knowing it'll drag my entire grade down is not a motivator, it's an anxiety-inducing nightmare. I have watched the videos ad nauseam. I have clicked on the "get help" links every single time. The problem is that I will mix up certain questions, then get them wrong even though I know the correct answer. Yes, these are my mistakes, but I'm freaking myself out so badly that I'm second-guessing my answers.

I was explaining to my parents that it feels like giving a dog pets for doing something good, but then kicking them when they do something wrong. The dog starts to get confused about which behaviors are good and which are bad and just becomes scared of everything associated with the person giving feedback. I used to love Khan Academy, but I'm becoming more and more frightened when pushing the blue "Check" button, almost like I'll receive a shock. 

I've read the articles on why you don't want to put a "start over" button on the course challenges, but I'm trying to give feedback on how I (and many others in my honors program) feel about this specific thing. 

Btw, this isn't my official school account. I created this account so I could make mistakes and practice without fear. I'm in ninth grade, and we use Khan Academy and Schoolhouse heavily in my program.

Is there a way to prevent the "Start Over" feature for certain activities such as a Unit Test?  I love using Course Mastery with my students but want them to use the Unit Test as a summative assessment of their learning.  Some have discovered the "Start Over" feature as a way to game the system rather than develop the study skills to prepare for the final assessment of their learning.  So they click on "Start Over" just as soon as they get a question wrong, rather than going through the entire assessment first.  Thanks for your consideration on how to resolve this problem.

Thank you for finally implementing the start over button. I read the whole article and I know that at the time of your posting the function had not yet been implemented but even today (1/8/23), the challenge of the course where I am (Math 3rd grade) is still missing. For me it's been frustrating to have to keep answering after an error that wasn't even due to lack of knowledge but a simple inattention in a single number. I've found myself wanting to speed through the rest of the answers just to get to the end and start the challenge over, but it's an exhausting process. The start over button still encourages us to persist in fixing what went wrong before. I understand that the lack of it encourages greater concentration on the issues to avoid mistakes, but I know that many users like me can make small slips not related to lack of knowledge about the subject, but due to technical errors (such as a bad PC key or accidental clicks) or even ADHD. I suggest that the longer tests, with more than 10 questions, be divided on the same page into sections of 5, so a course challenge would have 6 sections and if someone comes from a succession of correct answers but in the third question of the 6 section misses by one distraction, don't be forced to start the test from scratch just for the pleasure of seeing 100% progress. This is one thing that makes me nervous, incomplete progress. Maybe it's my perfectionism and I understand that making mistakes is part of it, but nobody wants to see their work incomplete, even if they intuitively have a good self-assessment of their learning and don't care about that small mistake that wasn't even due to lack of knowledge, having to live with with a 99% result on your screen, it's still disturbing. Please don't forget to include this feature in the course challenges as soon as possible.

Hi everyone! Wanted to let you know there is a confirmation modal that pops up when the Start Over link is clicked now. This is available on desktop web, mobile web, and the Khan Academy app. I hope this helps prevent any future unintentional restarts!

I just signed up my son for Khan Academy instead of sending him to a tutoring center.  I assigned him to do the 2nd grade course mastery test to identify where he needs help.  However, the cat jumped on the keyboard and accidentally entered several wrong "answers" in succession.  I don't see any way possible to delete this and restart the challenge.  I've tried removing it and re-adding it through assignments but it keeps bringing us back to the same question in the challenge where he exited.  There is no start over button like you mentioned.  How can I delete and restart please?

This is absolutely the WORST feature.

Students simply use it to get all the answers to every question just to get a 100%. 

Teachers MUST have the ability to turn off this feature, as well as limit the # of retakes for the quizzes or tests.

wow Regina Litman i was just reading the thread from 6 yrs ago and how u were making really good suggestions there, im surprised you are still active

while whoever is reading this does just that, I would like to bring up another problem to Grace. I am doing the Geometry unit right now, and some of the questions talk about rotating the figure or moving the figure, and in the videos, Sal rotates and moves the figure, however for us users, we don't have that option. We can only imagine it in our heads, and at least for me, that's really tough. Please address this issue ASAP.

Also Grace is it possible to make it so you can still master a skill outside of the unit test? because after you do the unit test and if you miss one question, that skill doesn't get mastered, and to master it you have to do the entire unit test again. Then if you miss another question the same problem happens. Restarting doesn't really help because if you are at the end of the test it's such a pain to do all of the questions again. 

i just read Igor's comment, and realized that he partly addressed this issue as well.

We use Khan to practice taught skills in the classroom.  Many students make a mistake and immediately hit "restart" instead of practicing further.  I would love to see a way teachers can hide this button on assignments.

Grace It seems like this feature STILL hasn't been added to course challenges it has been 3 years, it is of great annoyance not being able to reset these challenges and having my mastery damaged by a small mistake, a mistype, or a vaguely worded question, the start over feature is the reason why I returned to learning via Khan Academy, we need it added to course challenges sometime in the very near future
