How do you get banned?

I hope not. In my opinion no account should be banned. In the best cases, they shouldn't have access to the forums of any type. This ones and the ones with regard to questions on lectures. There are some accounts that have used exploits or glitches for gaining energy points but still they shouldn't be banned. That is natural curiosity to expand what we know and get things faster and in a more efficient way. 

So my conclusion is that I've no idea, and that there shouldn't be no thing as being banned on KA.

We sometimes ban accounts from community discussions for repeated violations of our Community Guidelines. Unless the user is posting inappropriate content or pure spam, we will usually send a few warning messages before banning an account.

Banned users are still able to use the site and access the learning materials, they just aren't able to make any public discussion posts or CS programs.

I have a question about that: How many times do you have to like receive a message from a guardian before you get banned? I heard of people getting banned from chatting, but how many warnings do you get? Or does it just depend? If you get a note from a guardian, can you respond to them, or is it just there?

I'm asking because I notice a lot of off-topic comments on programs and they spam everyone in the discussion, and some people say they've gotten guardian notes.

The number of warnings that users receive depends on the situation, but for minor issues (such as off-topic posts) we'll usually send at least two warning messages. There's also not a way to respond to warning messages.

Hi, I was curious if anyone knows how long a ban lasts? Is there a time frame that you’re banned for and then you get unbanned, or is it your banned and then you’re done kinda thing? I know there’s a ban appeal form, but is that the only way to get unbanned?

Hey, I'm wondering how many suspensions does a user get before they are permanently banned? Can permanent bans happen without warning for certain misbehaviors?

Hey so my friend bookmarked someone’s project and it’s showing that the page wasn’t found. Also, when he went back to some previous discussions with this user, they were all deleted. No trace of this person. Did they get bannned? How would we know if someone got banned? How would we know if we got banned?

I don't think Khan Academy allows us to know what actions are taken against another user, so I don't think there is any way to know whether that user got banned or just decided to delete their account.

I hope that Khan Academy sends a message to a user's email when the user gets banned, but I have not found anywhere on the website that specifies whether they contact a banned user at all.  If anyone knows, please post about it in this thread.

Generally yes, we do send a notification when an account is banned. The message would appear in your Khan Academy notifications (same as discussion notifications, new assignments, etc.)

Users can always request information about their ban status and work to undo the ban by submitting the appeal form provided here: https://support.khanacademy.org/hc/en-us/articles/115003343971-Why-was-I-banned

Additionally, please note that we can only provide ban information to the account owner.

So I saw someone get banned sept 27th but its been almost 4 months since. How long can bans last? They were banned for creating christian content.

The duration varies depending on the reason for the ban and the user's moderation history. We always share the duration of the ban once the user has submitted an appeal.

Interesting! I don't know the exact reason they were banned since I have no way of contacting them. Depending on the case how long can someone be banned for? What is the longest ban given besides a permanent ban? If someone gets banned permanently how can you tell?

It depends! The longer bans are handled on a case-by-case basis, but usually they aren't longer than 6 months. If the ban does become permanent, we do still let the user know that it will be permanent.

It's really not possible to tell whether or not a user has been permanently banned. In some cases, they might be past the ban length, but still be banned because they haven't completed all of the appeal steps yet.

Nice! That's a pretty good length since I know some can be quite severe. I feel that there should be a way to know if someone is permanantly banned because than you can know if they are coming back or if they aren't. 

I'm also curious why they got banned along with another person and that person has come back? I'm pretty sure they both came back on different alt accounts they had made a while back which is how I know how they got banned. Both accounts ended up getting banned. I don't know if creating another account lengthens the ban time but I think that may be what contributed to it?

Following up on my previous comment from 7 months ago. Since you mentioned they don't usually last longer than 6 months, i'm curious to why has it been 11 months since they were banned? 

I found a way to communicate with her but they mentioned they have submitted a ban appeal ~5 times in the last 11 months and had no response. They also mentioned briefly they had no statement saying they were permanantly banned. What are the chances they are permanantly banned/banned for an extended time?
