A couple of weeks ago one of my friends received Da Vinci and Ramanujan sun badge. I was pumped I could not wait to earn it. So I completed the task and earned 2 million energy points. But I did not receive it. Apparently, they were was retired. I am not sure why it was removed but I was certainly looking forward to earning it.
Why was the majority of the sun badges removed?

About 50 of the badges were recently retired because of the code and data queries that were required to keep them active. Khan Academy is currently undergoing a major change - the code base is being transferred from Python 2 to GO language. Retiring these badges was necessary in order to clean up the code and free up space for new features.
You are correct, Tesla has not been retired. Here is a full list of the badges that were retired:
Meteorite Badges that are now retired (20 total):
Thumbs up, Thumbs Down, Flag Duty, Express Yourself, Tinkerer, Researcher, Bibliographer, Good Habits, Inspired 15 Minutes, Makes perfect, Five is Alive, Challenge Accepted, High Five, Hang Ten, Fingers or Toes, Perseverance, Virus, Inspiration, Great Streak, and Awesome Streak
Moon Badges that are now retired (9 total):
Power Hour, Astute Analyzer, Excellent Teacher, Good Question, Geek of the week: Mastery, Good Inspiration, Ridiculous Streak, Ludicrous Streak, and 1000 Kelvin
Earth Badges that are now retired (15 total):
Investigator, Guru, Five times ten to the fifth, Double Power Hour, Rave Reviewer, Incredible Teacher, Sensei, Great Inspiration, Incredible Inspiration, Great Question, Incredible Question, Helen Keller, Ridiculous Listener, Sub Light Speed, and 299,792,458 Meters per Second.
