So people were saying custom thumbnails are against the guidelines, and I agree,but I was wondering if this counts as a custom thumbnail.

Should be allowed. By custom thumbnails, I'm pretty sure they were referring to editing the request to insert an image that's not in the program.

This is not an official response.

evt.detail is not illegal at all. All evt.detail does is counts how many times you have clicked the canvas. BTW, did you get that script from Red Hat's note to Evan Lewis?

Yes this was from Red Hat's note, because some people were saying that it was against the guidelines to do a thumbnail like that, so I wanted to make sure.
