How can we help?

What are Khan Academy's Community Guidelines?

Updated

Our mission

The mission of Khan Academy is to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. These Community Guidelines support this mission by creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels comfortable learning. Please follow these guidelines as you interact with other members on the platform.

Do:

Give great answers

  • We're all here to teach and learn from each other. Make your responses count by being thorough and helpful.
Instead of this: "Yes" or "No"
Try this: "Yes! Here's how I solved  it..." or "No, but here's what worked for me..."
  • Give complete answers that are easy to understand and explain your thinking. Share your steps like your favorite teacher would.

Be encouraging and patient

  • Remember that you were once new here too! Be kind and patient, especially with new learners. Take the time to make people feel welcome and help them get started on their learning journey.

Share tips and resources

  • Share your own tips and tricks for using Khan Academy
  • Link to relevant Khan Academy content (articles or videos) to support your answer
  • Point people to our Help Center or other useful resources
    • When Khan Academy doesn't cover a topic and additional detail is needed, it's okay to link to a trustworthy external site, but only if the link follows our Link Guidelines

Be self-sufficient first

  • Before asking a new question, do a quick search to see if someone’s already asked it. If they have, jump into that thread or upvote a helpful answer! You can also find great resources in our Help Center and Support Community.

Use the correct forums

If you’re giving feedback about a course:

  • Use the Tips & Thanks forum to share helpful study tips or feedback about specific content items.
  • Mistakes found in videos, exercises, or articles can be reported using the steps described in this article.
  • Use the Content Requests and Feedback forum (in the Help Center) for general suggestions about courses.
  • Use the Feature Requests and General Site Feedback forum (in the Help Center) for other feedback about the site.
  • Upvote helpful questions and answers instead of repeating them.

Keep it safe: protect your info and respect others’

  • We want everyone in our community to feel safe and respected. That means never posting or asking for personal information, even if it seems harmless. This helps protect your privacy and the privacy of others. Please don’t share or request the following:
    • Email addresses
    • Social media usernames (Instagram, Discord, TikTok, etc.)
    • Phone numbers or mailing addresses
    • Gaming or streaming handles
    • Real names, ages, locations, or any other personal details someone might prefer to keep private

Even with good intentions, sharing this kind of information can lead to risks.

Don’t:

Post low-quality content

Ask yourself: "Would I be comfortable if my parent or teacher read this?" Remember that Khan Academy is used by learners of all ages, and we expect everyone's comments to reflect that.

This includes:

  • Low-quality comments, spam, or nonsense - This includes duplicate answers, repeated posts, ads, or asking others to follow you or upvote your posts.
  • Offensive comments - Anything rude, disrespectful, or hurtful to another Khan Academy member, including volunteers and staff

Have off-topic discussions

  • Irrelevant comments - Make sure your questions and comments are relevant to the subject area you're posting in. If your message isn’t directly related to the learning content on Khan Academy, please post it in the appropriate subforum within the Support Community
    • This also applies to Computer Programming projects — discussions should stay focused on the code and related technical topics.
  • Social chatting - General conversation isn't allowed on content pages. Keep discussions focused on learning.
  • Divisive topics - Since Khan Academy is focused on learning, we ask that discussion about religion and current political events generally be kept off the site. There are many places on the internet where these discussions are welcome, but we've found these topics largely distracting on Khan Academy.
    • Note: Exceptions can be made for certain humanities content (such as history), but please consider whether your comments truly serve the best interest of the learning community.

Violate profile guidelines

Your username, nickname, and bio must follow all of the Community Guidelines. In addition:

  • Don’t include personal contact information
  • Don’t include any off-site links
  • Don’t use any nicknames that would imply you are affiliated with Khan Academy staff, moderators, or volunteers
  • Do not include inappropriate language in your username
  • Don't pretend to be someone else, including volunteers or staff.

Violations may result in post removal, suspension of commenting privileges, and other actions

Reporting concerns

  • Do not respond to the post yourself — replying can cause arguments or possibly worsen the situation. Our Guardian team will take action and reach out to the user if needed.

Why was I banned?

Users who persistently violate Khan Academy's Community Guidelines may be banned from participating in community activities. If you'd like to submit a ban appeal, fill out and submit a Ban Appeal Form.

A Guardian will review your request and respond to you via a Guardian message on your profile. Please note that we receive lots of ban appeal requests, so it may take several days to receive a response.
