What is the difference between AP Chemistry and AP Chemistry beta?

Hi pheehaoyan! Good question - the older AP Chemistry course contains lots of videos and articles covering most of the topics in AP Chemistry, but this content isn't organized to the latest AP Chemistry Course and Exam Description (CED). The older AP Chemistry course also doesn't contain any practice questions. In contrast, the AP Chemistry beta course is designed specifically with the AP Chemistry CED in mind and has practice questions for every lesson currently in the course. However, the beta course isn't yet complete (currently, we have content for three of the nine total units). Once the beta course is complete, we'll replace the older course with the new AP Chemistry course and only have one on Khan Academy.

In the meantime, I would recommend completing what we have in the AP Chemistry beta course and then moving to the older AP Chemistry course (you'll need to use the Course and Exam Description to know exactly which topics to study in the older course!). I really like this course for studying for next year's AP Chem class and I was wondering when the rest of the units will be available

If i'm preparing to take AP chemistry in high school next year is it better to go through the older AP Chemistry or the beta?

I would suggest using both courses to prepare for AP Chemistry: I would start by completing what we have in the AP Chemistry beta course, and then I would move to the older AP Chemistry course and work through the remainder of the topics there (you'll need to use the AP Chemistry Course and Exam Description to know exactly what to study in the older course). This has been so helpful. So, I am taking AP Chemistry next year and took Honors Chemistry two years ago (this past year, I took AP biology). I was wondering if you think it would be more beneficial to review the regular chemistry course instead of learning the AP Chem curriculum over the summer, or if by learning the AP Chem, I will be simultaneously doing enough review.

I do think the AP Chemistry beta course alone would be enough review, especially if you utilized the hints and rationales in the practice exercises. However, since it's not yet complete, I'd recommend working through both courses. Do you know when the full course is going to be finalized and uploaded? I am studying beforehand for my ap class in September, and was wondering if by then it would be complete?

I was wondering if you guys could add thermodynamics to AP chem beta because that is a topic I really struggle with. Thanks!

Hi Emaggyar12 - thanks for the feedback! We do have plans to add thermodynamics content to AP Chemistry beta, although it's unlikely that this content will be released in the next 6-12 months. In the meantime, I highly recommend you check out some of the videos and articles in our older AP Chemistry course, particularly those in the Thermodynamics unit. I hope that helps!

I have questions about the chemistry courses:

Can you explain the differences between the AP/College Chemistry, the AP/College Chemistry beta, Organic Chemistry, and Chemistry library? I understand a few of the differences, but I would like to know what would work best for me.

I am homeschooled, so Khan Academy is my primary resource for math and science.
I was starting to study the chemistry from the general course before it was renamed library. Because Chemistry Library is now more of a reference place, should I switch to something else that I can study from start to finish?

Hi Heyyitzdan - great questions! The general chemistry course (now the "Chemistry library") is unfortunately not aligned to NGSS. We do hope to create content specifically for NGSS in the future, though, so stay tuned. As for AP Music Theory/ACT practice, we don't currently have plans to create these courses, but we'll definitely keep your feedback in mind for the future!

Hi Christie! I'd be happy to help explain the differences. To start, the Chemistry library is more of a reference place, like you said, and not a course that is intended to be worked through from beginning to end.

As for the other three courses:

Organic Chemistry is a fairly complete course that could be worked through from start to finish. It is roughly equivalent to a first semester organic chemistry course. Unfortunately, this course doesn't include practice, and I wouldn't suggest working through this course unless you've already worked through/taken a college-level general chemistry course.

AP/College Chemistry is our older AP Chemistry course. This course includes lots of videos and articles on the topics in AP Chemistry but no practice. Additionally, the course is not aligned to the newest AP Chemistry Course and Exam Description (CED). You could work through this course from beginning to end, but keep in mind that this course wasn't originally designed for that, and some of the videos/articles may be out of order.

AP/College Chemistry beta is our new AP Chemistry course. It is designed specifically with the AP Chemistry CED in mind, has lots of practice, and is being intentionally built as a course you could work through from start to finish. However, the beta course isn't yet complete (currently, we have content for three of the nine total units).

Given all that, I would suggest starting with the AP/College Chemistry beta course and then (once you reach the end of the new content there) moving into the legacy AP/College Chemistry course. You can use the AP Chemistry CED I linked to above to know which topics to study and in what order in the older course.

I was curious how long it will take to release each unit? For instance, how long until Unit 5 of the Ap Chem beta is released and how long after that until Unit 6 is released and so on.

Hi Brittg501 and hummela! We're hoping to have Unit 4 completed by the end of this year, another unit completed by the 2021 exam (May 2021), and the remainder of the units completed by the 2022 exam (May 2022). I hope that helps!
