I grade my kids by asking them to work for 45 minutes each week in Khan. I see a discrepancy for many kids when I look at my report and their report. If I click on student progress, I get a list of all the minutes each student has done. For some students, this time does not match with what I have. Usually their account is showing more time done than mine is showing. What is the accurate way to count time for each student? At this point, I am very confused!

Hello Ann! My name is Lisa Krueger and I am a Khan Academy Ambassador teaching in Chicago. I had a similar problem last year! Unfortunately, Khan Academy only tracks logged in time not actual usage time and there are always those students who log in then open a new window and do other things. So, I compared the total minutes displayed under the Student Progress tab to the minutes displayed when I click on the student's name. I've attached a screen shot in which aalvarez125 shows 7 minutes; however, the skills breakdown only shows 3 minutes and no videos were watched. Another, thing I tried was assigning a set number of skills and/or videos. I realize this is more work for the teacher, but I found that when the students were "called out" once or twice about the discrepancies they were more diligent. Hope this helped. When calculating time spent on the site, we include all of the time students have spent actively engaged in the material (both videos and skills). After two minutes of inactivity, a student is no longer counted as engaged. We count time conservatively so that it won't be easy for students to open KA, surf the web, and get credit for practicing math.
With that said, it's common for students to take more than 2 minutes working out a problem. We encourage you to use time as a general benchmark, but to be generous if students say they have been on the site for longer.

I also count time and my students are finally realizing that the computer can only count their active minutes. However, students who are using the app are not able to work on their assigned mission, they only can watch videos. Also, their active time is not counted on the app. Is there another app where students have access to their missions?
