How many tasks each day to complete a grade in one year?
Approximately how much work should be done each day to complete a grade in a year?

Hi Anne! My name is Megan G and I am a middle school mathematics teacher in Chicago. I also work with Khan Academy as an ambassador to support teachers like yourself using Khan Academy in their classrooms. This year, I am teaching a 5th grade math class to a general education class and a 5th grade gifted class. If you think about the missions on Khan Academy like a course for the school year, I think that can be helpful when determining pacing. For example, my general education classroom might take the entire school year to complete all of the activities included in the 5th grade mission. The gifted 5th grade math class is an accelerated and they would cover twice the amount of content as the other class during the same year. Each student learns at a different pace and Khan Academy is rooted in mastery learning, that ensuring that students master concepts before they move onto more complex math. Typically, I have the students start class with 15-20 minutes, at that pace we are able learn the content required for the school year. It's a great question and other teachers might be able to chime in and share their experience to help answer your inquiry.
Hello, I'm Danny a middle school math teacher.
It depends on the student. It also depends on the length of time they have been exposed to Khan. For example in a 6th grade class of 24 students (low-income, minority, 50% ELL) about 6 students completed 100% of the 6th grade mission and over 90% of the Arithmetic Mission.
Two students only did about 50% of the mission. And the other 16 students finished over 80% of the mission. For all of them it was their first time working with Khan.
For my 7th grade class of 24, there were 12 students who finished 100% of 7th grade mission. Two students who only got to about 50% and 10 students were above 80%. These students have been using Khan for 1.5 years. They are a similar population as 6th grade.
In the beginning the students fly through the skills, they get through the simple stuff pretty fast. About 50% complete within the first 3 months. But they usually hit a wall and they take 6 months to work on the final 50%.
So in the beginning about 2-3 skills per day, and then after they hit a wall it becomes more like 3-4 skills / week. At that pace they can easily finish, but again it depends on the student.
I would like to add to this discussion by saying that if you are starting a group of kiddos in Khan and they have never used it before, you might find that backing them up a grade level to start can be helpful, or let them take mastery tests in the grade level before what you are expecting them to complete. Khan is very different from a textbook or "A, B, C, D" platform. There is a higher level of thought required. I have had many students not complete their full year, but because they went back a year to start had more depth of knowledge in math. They end up using summer month to finish the current grade level. You know your students if they are struggling, it's probably because they are missing something from a previous grade.
Once I finished 5th grade in a week.
15% every day
