Please, can you add something where you can take a test and it will tell you where you are and what you need to work on? I am in 7th grade studying for an algebra placement but don't know where to start and where I think might be a good place I know all the stuff so I move up but all the stuff is too hard.
Hi Mei, I agree a short test before starting a new mission could greatly cut down on unnecessary skills to work on, as well as focus on skills you really need help on. I hope something like this is on the todo list, thanks for the suggestion!
Regarding where you should start, using the search bar might help you find specific skills you need help on or need to review. You find that by clicking the magnifying glass on the header of the site. You can also visit the subject (like pre-algebra) and find a section that correlates with your needs.

While there is no placement tests. Looking at the subject you need to study for might help. Each of those links provides you with a list of main topics, and to the right of those are the sub topics of each area. Determining where you are, while maybe not as effective as a placement test should be a matter of narrowing down what you know, versus what is available. Look at main topics, then sub topics of each section and determine if you already know it, or if you need to understand it better. Algebra is a cumulative math. If you don't know the preceeding information, you will cause yourself undue heartache. Graphing circles using polynomials with missing values without understanding how to complete the square will cause you problems for example.

I definitely agree on this! My math scores have been low all my life and I’ve never really not been behind in math. Just recently I started back with school and my mom wanted me to take a math placement test after spending last semester doing Khan Academy. This math placement test is for children new to the Saxon program and will be beginning it, I’m not new. My first math program was Saxon and I cried everytime I did. If I take a math Saxon placement test and keep doing Khan Academy, opinions will be different and maybe I don’t end up where I need to go? I think a math placement test would be awesome and I could definitely use it, seeming as I have heard lots of stories of people who used Khan Academy in math and got super hig grades on the SAT for it. As district support in my county, I too would love to see a placement test for students. For example, our adult education students come in to our program at varying levels; often they are unsure what their skill levels are in math, English, reading, and writing. We have found that the diagnostic quizzes on SATPractice.org are far too advanced for many of our learners. Has there been any consideration for building a placement test (especially in math) for students so that teacher can more easily identify areas for focus?
Also, has there been any thought about creating support for the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) test? In piloting SATPractice.org for our adult education population, again we learned that the skills for SAT are too advanced. Geometry is typically the highest math level students need to be successful on the TABE.

Just another person chiming in on needing a placement test. I understand that review is beneficial. But, if someone can test at a "Mastered" level and still has to run through it anyway that time could have been better spent. I am actually looking into purchasing another program, instead of donating money here, because I think a placement test would help focus on the gaps so we could move on instead of recovering things my daughter understands already.
I fully agree with the comments above about needing a placement test. I thought I had remembered there being one several years back for my son. The idea of being placed exactly where you need to be in any given field instead of spending so much time with random questions is ideal. It would have brought us to the site instead of finding other tools.
38-year-old mother here. I'm homeschooling my daughter and want to get a leg up. But I have absolutely no clue where to start.. Only thing I could think to do was start from the very beginning. Time consuming, to say the least, to go through 2nd grade math. But I want to make sure I don't miss a hiccup along the way. It's all there is to do to make sure I don't miss a weak spot, which is what happened to me at some point during my actual schooling.
All that to say I am 100% in favor of a placement test for each subject!
As a math intensive teacher assistant, I have worked with many students who are grade levels behind and it can be hard to determine where students actually are in term of skill and grade level. Placement tests would save time reviewing skills that the students may already be familiar with and give me as a teacher a concrete point of the best level to begin working with the student. I initially thought this is what the math missions were, giving easier or more difficult problems based on the students performance, but I see it is just a review of all the skills in one course. Hopefully some sort of placement test could be developed within Khan Academy in the future because otherwise I think it is a great resource for parents, teachers, and students.
P.s.- If anyone is in need of reading comprehension placement tests readtheory.org has a brief one that I believe spans grades k-12.
Seems like the OLDER version of Khan academy with just skills, that had a placement test, or an alignment test, was much better. I understand why they went with grade levels, but I need something that will find and just hit what the students misunderstood or possibly missed (due to moving a lot, major absences for health or family, whatever.) I don't need them to review a whole grade level.
This used to be great for that.
