We’ve added a few new badges to mark progress towards your learning and subject mastery goals on Khan Academy.

This was a recent project that some team members worked on during our recent company hackathon (more badges to come), here's their project statement:

"With these badges, we wanted to celebrate a diverse group of individuals who overcame significant challenges on their way to an education — several, in fact, were self-taught! We hope they inspire learners as much as they’ve inspired us. We’ll be adding even more badges in the near future, so stay tuned!"

The next batch of badges from this project will be focused in particular around achievements in our Science and Humanities content - what are some other things that you'd like to see new badges for?

Those are cool! I am especially looking forward to the Science and humanities badges! :D

One badge I suggest is a challenge patch for the Advanced JS: Games and visualizations. There already seems to be a logo for the topic in a class's mission options:

It would be great if users got this badge for completing that topic, since it's the only CS course without a challenge patch.

Awsome Thank-you for the updated badges they also have more color to them I am glad that you haave a Ramanujan badge for when one reaches 2,000,000 energy points I am almost at 1,500,000 I have allot of learning to earn that badge.

Has Khan Academy designed any Pixar badges?

I would love to see more streak badges. Since there's a group with over 500 days. Also, maybe add a World of Math master badge? My ideas: 'Badge count" badge(s), "Videos watched" badge(s), more point badges(like 5,000,000), more skill/math badges, and more "date join" badges. =)

I have an idea for a new badge. On the week beginning April 12, I'm going to host a week-long event on KA called Pamela Week. It would be really cool if you guys could make a badge called "Pamela Fox" that's a meteorite badge. It could have a picture of a fox on it, which would go very well with the red meteorite badges. The badge could be earned when a user gets 1, 3, 5 or 10 votes on a project, and it could give 100 energy points. Who is in charge of making badges? Can someone send me a link to them? (Or come to me xD)

Good ideas from everyone! There are badges for being a member up to four years, but none for 5, 6, or 7 years! I once held a contest for a 5 year badge, here's the link:

Could we have the following badges:

Bill gates badge: This badge would be required to complete all Computer Programming lessons and videos this means that HTML,CSS,Javascript, SQL and Jquery would have to be fully completed to earn this badge

Einstein badge: When watching any physics video based on Einstein's formulas will earn this badge

Stephen Hawking badge: When the entire Physics section is completed the badge would be earned it would be a way to showcase just how great Stephen Hawking is.

Finally A Chris Hadfield badge for completing the Nasa Section.

Here's a few ideas for badges:

Excellent Evaluator (Sun) - Evaluate 300 projects.

I think evaluating is helpful so this badge would be great!

Good Flagger (Moon) - Raise 10 flags that guardians approve.

Guardians should approve the flags so people don't just flag random things to get the badge.

Good Answers (Moon) - Post 10 answers that earn 2+ votes.

I think it should be 2 instead of 3 because once one person votes the answer up, it usually means it's good. It's much more difficult to get an answer with 3+ votes.

Unnamed (Sun) - Master 600 unique skills.

Unnamed (Sun) - Master 700 unique skills

etc.

We should have something after Da Vinci

Good Learner (Moon) - Watch 20 videos

Great Learner (Earth) - Watch 100 videos

Awesome Learner (Sun) - Watch 500 videos

I think there should be sun badges for 3,000,000, 5,000,000, and 7,500,000 energy points. Perhaps leave out the 3 million and the 7.5 million. I have an idea for a black hole badge where you finish almost everything on khan academy, every video watched, every programming thing done, everything mastered, every badge except atlas artemis and the hidden badges earned, etc etc. How about some badges for mastering skills after Da Vinci? Perhaps the KA community doesn't want people to earn too many points with them, so they could appear rarely, like a badge for mastering 750 skills and gives 250,000 points, then one for mastering 1000 skills and gives 300,000 points, and a challenge patch or sun badge for completing every single math skill. (Points or not.) I think there should be more evaluation badges. A sun badge for evaluating 500, and 1000. And then a black hole for 10,000 or 100,000?

Some ideas that I have are to but badges for getting 25% 50% 75% AND 100% through history science and language arts as well as getting badges such as 750 skills mastered 1,000 and 1,250 skills mastered. Thank you. Also can you make a new math tournament organised by grade or age? And then a final where everyone competes and the winner of each part gets a badge and some points? I think that would engage more students into learning so that they can learn (even me). It would make an amazing inspiration and there should also be a five or 6 day gap between the contests for the competitors to study for the competition. Thank you so much. I love when khan academy gets better(every day). I use Khan academy almost everyday on school days for an hour because I i am taking online math 4 grades ahead of me(Thanks to Khan Academy) #KhanAcademy4Life ( for the Stephan hawking badge he is dead but he was amazing and the best scientist after 1970 :))

Hello Khan academy, these suggestions are nice but i recommend you put a badge for completing a mastery task which could be hard to finish. Like...... Task Master : Completing 10 Mastery Tasks.

When will new badges be coming out? A cool one to do would be getting 100% on practice tasks first time around 5 tasks in a row. Ex, when you only get 75% on something you can keep trying until you get it right, but if you get 100% the first time you take the task, it shows that you were really paying attention. To do that 5 tasks in a row would be a great challenging badge.

Another one would be to watch all videos, articles, and complete all tasks and challenges for a subject, essentially finishing that subject 100%. By 'subject' I mean something like Biology or 8th grade math, not all math for all grades. As you progressed, you could earn it multiple times through the years.

Hi Mark,

Many badges were recently removed, this includes the Ramanujan sun badge also. This is due to KA moving from their current codebase (which is also being retired) to a new one, and carrying unused or out of date badges to the new codebase would be a high-effort and complex project.

Khan Academy supports a community of gender inclusive language. I hope you can go into your original message and change:

"Supernova badges are mythic. Exotic in both nature and reality, these Khan Academy awards are so rare that no sane person would dare to exhaust himself."

to something like:

"Supernova badges are mythic. Exotic in both nature and reality, these Khan Academy awards are so rare that no sane persons would dare to exhaust themselves."

By changing it to a plural tense, the use of gender-specific pronouns are avoided. I admit that I first changed it to "himself or herself", but I now know that some people have even different gender identifications.

Most of your suggestions are great (including some names inspired by individuals of female gender), but here are a few that I think may not be the best for Khan Academy's inclusive culture or emphasis on doing well:

God's Plan - My issue with this one is that we are a worldwide community, and not all participants are from a religion that worships God.

Beebo Loves You - Maybe it's because I am 67 years old (68 in less than a month) and not a fan of science fiction, super heroes, or most TV series or toys of the past 50 years, but who is Beebo? Would everyone know who Beebo is? Is Beebo only a cultural or other type of icon in some parts of the world but not others?

Warmind - Again, where does this come from? If it promotes excess competition (war), it may not be in participants' best interest.

Time Is His Cage - Needs a gender-neutral name. How about Time Is Your/My Cage? If this is a direct quote from some science fiction story/movie or video game, and thus the "His" must be preserved, it still may be lost on people who don't follow this genre or aren't from a country where it is popular. And even if it is from a direct quote, changing "His" to one of the other suggested pronouns would likely still ring a bell with fans of the source work.

Joestar Legacy - Regarding Joestar, see my remarks about Beebo.

WRYYY - Acronyms are not my specialty. What does this mean? It should be spelled out so that everyone will know what it means. Actually, I just Googled it and learned that it is not an acronym but a way of pronouncing the word "why" that may be degrading to native speakers of one particular language. Even if this is not the intended use of WRYYY here, it probably should still be changed to avoid confusion with that one.

Keep Riding the Lightning, Son - See "Time Is ... Cage" above regarding the need for a gender-neutral name, even if this is from a direct quote. Suggestion: Just make it "Keep Riding the Lightning". I did consider changing "Son" to "Kid", but see the next item for why I didn't do this.

You're Gonna Go Far, Kid - The emphasis in Khan Academy should be on good grammar. It should be "You're Going To Go Far, Kid". The "Kid" part may be ageism for people like me, so maybe limit it to "You're Going To Go Far".

Truth, Justice, and the American Way - I'm from the United States of America (USA), but not everyone here is. Maybe come up with something more global for this one.

Sun Badge: Fastest Man Alive - "Fastest Human Alive" or "Fastest Person Alive".

Black Hole Badge: God of Speed - Need something less religious-oriented.

Black Hole Badge: By Odin's Beard - This is from a mythical character who could be studied in a traditional classical education rather than a modern science fiction or action character, but it still may be a bit too [can't think of the word] for most Khan Academy students.

Earth Badge: Wombo Combo Streak - If Wombo has any specific meaning besides a nonsense word to rhyme with Combo, see Beebo above.

Black Hole Badge: Return of the Mack - Regarding Mack, see Beebo above.

Black Hole Badge: Grodd Friended Me - Regarding Grodd, see Beebo above.

The following are ones I didn't like at first but decided are all right:

Tonight's Biggest Loser - Do we want to reward poor achievement? On the other hand, it is demoralizing to get all answers wrong, so maybe we should give people something for their effort. Then again, one of the problems I'd have with this one is the situation in which people who get the first question wrong then put in random answers for the rest of the exam knowing they're going to have to do the whole thing over again anyway.

Any with Master in their name - I decided that this is a reference to mastery of a skill, topic, etc., not a use of male-centric language.

Again, thank you for all of your ideas! I think the concept is great.

New tier: Ultimate badges
