Restarting An Assignment

So what has become of this topic? It's clearly an issue still and remains a popular request among users. The answer given in other post stating the reason behind not creating a simpler way to reset the quizzes makes very little sense "We want to encourage growth mindset and learning on our platform, and a “Restart Button” would not encourage that. ". So instead users will just purposely fill in wrong answers to get to the end. FORCING people into your method of instruction seems counterintuitive to the whole 'growth of mindset'. I guess it must be your way or no way. Is that Khan Academy's definition of free thinking?

Nothing will ever come of this topic. They don't care -at all- about feedback... all they care about is engagement.

By removing the ability to restart an assignment, you are forcing people to spend more time on the platform, therefore bolstering their numbers to satisfy their donors.

It has absolutely nothing to do with educational integrity or retention. That's not their priority.

I stumbled across this topic as a father of twins who have been with Khan Academy since grade 3/3rd grade and who are now making their way through Khan Academy precalculus.

The desire to be able to get 100% is perfectly understandable.  But it's not the way of the world (ie. Real Life).  We all have our great days when everything is firing perfectly.  We also have our not-as-good days when so-called "stupid" mistakes creep in.  Has anyone ever gone an entire day without forgetting a student or client's name, complete a scheduled task (take out the recycling container)?  No.  You haven't.  Neither have I.  Neither has Sal Khan (I assume;)

I discovered early on that setting a goal of 100% for my kids created an incentive for them to search online for short-cuts and cheats (I've probably seen at least a dozen of them by now). Monitoring them occasionally to stop the short-cuts then immediately brought on the frustration that others here have mentioned.  Once I saw this happening  I changed our approach immediately.  I made their overall course goal 95% before they were allowed to move on to the next math year/subject.  I first changed it to 90%.  But now it's 95%.  My kids and I read Sal Khan's book "One World Schoolhouse" together on our bigscreen. The chapter that explains what he calls "swiss cheese learning" really resonated with us.

Education is a process not a goal.  It's true that there are some professions that often require 100% (medicine, law, air traffic controller).  But practitioners in these professions are taught to collaborate with others to make certain that any "stupid" mistakes have been caught and eliminated.

I don't think the problem is that kids aren't allowed to make "stupid" mistakes.  The problem is that some parents and educators need to resolve the issues that have caused them to demand 110% (pun intended).  90% for the vast majority of students is an amazing score and should be a cause for celebration!  90% is an "A" under most grading scales.  95% on Khan Academy for us meant 99% on our school's state assessment tests.

The process of getting from 90 to 95 percent is an entire topic unto itself.  Using the overly simplistic carrot and stick analogy as a starting point only; we made the carrot very large (meaning a greater incentive for getting to 95%).  Using any sort of "stick" (punishment) is not something that we've ever used.  In fact, it shouldn't be used ever.  It   Our twins probably feel differently about all of this.  They would likely insist that we have made them want the incentive/carrot so much that it's become like a stick.  But they'll just have to hang onto that idea for when they study philosophy.

JUST ADD A RESET BUTTON!!! I HAVE TO DO 30 QUESTION ASSIGNMENTS AND EVERY TIME I MISS ONE!!! JUST ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE TO START OVER! I HAVE TO SKIP THROUGH ALL THE QUESTIONS ONLY TO RESTART AND HAVE A HIGH CHANCE OF SLIPPING UP AGAIN! PLEASE FIX THIS ISSUE!

Look. I know Khan Academy thinks that this is supposed to teach kids to "have a growth mindset" and to "go slower and pay attention" on assignments but all it really does is just cause kids to become upset. Especially if the teacher makes it a goal for the students to get a hundred percent. Plus, when I use this site I have to do this after school, and I have limited time to do my homework. Every time I slip up, I lose more time to do other work. Please fix this issue. If not for your users and customers, do it for the sake of your donors who are currently spending their hard earned money on this useless program.

Hooray for the reset button, but... for some reason, Khan Academy decided they'd just do a 'concession', locking the reset button if it's still possible to get a 'Proficient'. This basically means that the only thing they changed really is lowering the number of questions you need to skip over before being able to restart :P

John Florsheim, while being told you only need to achieve a 90% is absolutely wonderful when doing an IXL assignment where a wrong answer can drop you by five correct answers' worth of points, and also very nice when you're doing a take-home quiz, I will gape at you if you ever suggested leaving a Khan Academy quiz etc at Proficient, since Mastered is where all the spiritual gratification and dopamine's at. It's this weird sense of completionist-ism or whatever.
So while your view on stupid mistakes is one I'd be happy for all the teachers in the world to adopt, before you try to work word magic on me you should first try the low-hanging fruit, you know, the people aiming to get every single coin in Geometry Dash levels. Or the people trying to collect all 900 korok seeds (you only need 441) in BotW.

The difference between Proficient and Mastery ah. To stand above transcendence and gaze down upon the plebian masses who satisfy themselves with a half-step, a shadow of a shadow of great wisdom. The difference between Proficiency and Mastery is larger than the difference between Heaven and Earth, between a lowly ant and the Martians of H.G. Wells. Mastery is an immortal sage, barely sparing a glance for the foolish Proficient emperors swallowing mercury in a futile grasp for agelessness. Proficience is a graffiti artist's 'so and so was here'; better than the crude vandalism it could have been, sure. But Mastery: veni. Vidi, vici! This is not merely a sense of moral superiority the high of which doomscrolling Redditors run themselves ragged in pursuit after, for
