Why can't we reset the unit tests/quizzes after messing up? I've been at this for hours and cannot get 100% because it makes me complete the test instead of just being able to start over. How are people not complaining about this more? half the time is spent just typing fake answers to skip through so i can start over. So frustrating. Why haven't they fixed this?
Vehemently agreed. I just did 19 questions, burning 40 minutes, then got a wrong answer because of a typo. Now, to get complete, I have to redo 40 minutes of material I already know front and back hand. Quite frustrating. What they should do is at least give you a limited number of resets. Like, if you get the answer wrong *once*, then it doesn't count against your grade. I realize this is different from normal tests, but the point is learning, not passing a test. And with the capabilities of computers, in a non-professional setting, you should be able to fail at least once. There is no certificatation, no degree, nothing to really mandate perfect test scores, except points. The only thing that changes with 1 do-over is you have to reiterate ALL the material. Which on one hand is good for reasserting you know the material, but the unforgiving nature is astoundingly annoying when you only made a typo.
I suppose, knowing the system, you just have to be extra careful and triple check your answer before you submit it. I suppose it does teach good habits. But Jesus it is really annoying.
I'm 33, I'm an adult. It's super frustrating to mess up a unit test. I cannot even imagine what this might be for a kid.
If you make the mistake in the beginning, you know you'll have to do all the test up to the end and then repeat it to try to get it all perfect next time. How long could that take? 1 hour maybe for two repetitions? 1 hour wasted because of a very stupid mistake like those mentioned before. 1 hour that could've been used to actually learn some math.
This doesn't encourage me to learn math, this makes exactly the opposite.
Suggestion: give the user a second chance to answer without penalty. That way you realize you made a typo, or forgot something or whatever.
The reset button would also okay but the problem would be the same if you make the mistake at almost the end of the test.
I appreciate Khan Academy and all the people behind it, but you shouldn't ignore people for a year. This is the kind of things that would make a difference. In the schools they cannot change things, it's a system, it's slow, there are chain of commands, laws... Here, on the other hand, it just takes the willing to actually make things better. So, do it, please.
Those last two comments have nothing to do with this string and should be moved elsewhere. This string is dedicated to resolving the user experience catastrophe that occurs when a simple mistake is made during one of the tests: in order to get 100%, the user is forced to repeat the whole test and hope they don't click anything by mistake. Many times the gui itself is at fault. The user base is requesting a reset button to allow them to start the test over when such a mistake occurs. I, for one, can't even use khan academy anymore because the frustration in not having 100% is too much to bear. I'm awaiting the day where the comment comes back through this string letting me know that it's been resolved and a reset button will be deployed in the next update. Until that time, I can neither recommend the product nor use it myself.
Thanks for clearing that up, Michael. Totally that this functionality alone makes this app unusable for me. Not only do you have to repeat the entire unit test (eg. Fractions), you then have to 100% it once before being able to 100% it again to finally fill your mastery bars.
One simple miss-click on an early question can waste 30 minutes of your time, which for many working stiffs is half the time they're able to study per day. Please, Khan Academy, if there needs to be a toggle to switch this on in settings based on age, fine, just let us do it somehow...
This would be very helpful! One of my assignments this year is finishing all quizzes and tests at 100% under a certain topic, specifically AP Gov in this case. While repetition may help hammer home the lesson, I feel that I would still be going through that repetition by having to reset the test when I get the wrong answer; I have spent hours on some tests trying to get 100%, sometimes simply making a misclick that means I must waste at least 5 minutes more going through the test when I'll have to retake it. Please add this feature, Khan Academy- thank you!!
Reset button, please! :) I found this thread after googling "how to reset a test in Khan Academy". I see I'm not the only one with this suggestion.
I want to say huge THANK YOU to Khan Academy for existing! It is such an amazing site that I am truly grateful for. I read the "Letter to myself" in March from Sal. It choked me up. Thank you Sal, for your persistence. Please add a reset button for us so we can persist in our learning and start over & move forward to the next lessons more quickly when we make silly errors.

Wow! We're still discussing this. I am guessing that Khan Academy has not implemented this feature yet due to one or more of the following:
1. There is still dissension among the powers that be as to whether this will compromise any academic principles. I hope that the contributions in this discussion by adult learners who want to set their own standards will sway them in the direction of eventually implementing this.
2. They want to do it and plan to do it but haven't figured out how to program it on all platforms.
3. They want to do it and know how to program it, but they have other priorities for the use of their small staff.
4. They're still tweaking the new course mastery system, and this is one of the tweaks they intend to do, but they're saving them to be done all at once.
I know I posted somewhere back in February, either here or in a different topic that I created, that one thing I might prefer over a reset button is the option to add a question to the current practice/quiz/test/course challenge to test the same skill when a question is missed. I would rather see this type of thing implemented if I make my first and only mistake on question 12 of 13, instead of resetting the test.
It's been about 2 years now I can't use this app because of the missing reset button. I keep watching/hoping. I'm also unable to recommend the app to anyone until it's fixed. It's just not an enjoyable experience. I feel like I'm only getting good at repeating tests I've already passed and good working around device glitches, but I'm certainly not learning any math.
I just took a 13-problem Unit Test. I got the first 12 correct but got the unlucky 13th wrong! No, it was not a careless mistake. It was from misunderstanding the concept being tested. The reset unit test option being discussed here would not have helped me one bit!
I have proposed an alternate solution to this frustration many of us are experiencing when we get an early question wrong. I posted it in this discussion once before, but I recently started a discussion of its own concerning my approach. Ideally, both the reset unit test and my idea of extending the test by one question can be implemented.

As one who wants to achieve 100% all the time, I guess I have to make exception for this Khanacademy unit test....this is unbelievable, due to the unclear saying in the question, I did the unit test with 21 questions all day long.............. just cannot get the full score, this is unbelievable.
Is that ironic? Under the topic of statistics, they do not understand the importance of statistics. Instead, requiring the theoretically perfect score. I mean... com'on, be practical! Either add that button for those to got almost perfect score every time, or reset how you count that score...

I've been doing the same unit test for a couple of hours now, and it is really frustrating because I always end up missing the first question, usually due to a misclick or just simply going too fast because I just want to finish. This is frustrating me because I know the topic I just want to finish it on khan academy too, but instead, it's making me finish the rest of the test and go through the problems I know how to solve but it is very time consuming to solve them. I see the cons of a restart button, but in my opinion there are enough people that are requesting this feature that it should be implemented
It should be much easier to reset the quiz cause I didn’t get 100% on a lesson because I either answered wrong or looked at hints A WEEK AGO! Why isn’t there at least a daily reset (optional if possible, not forced on those who don’t want it.) we shouldn’t be punished for being 100% right for something I did a different day before.
Imagine if a teacher at a school told you face to face that you didn’t get 100% on a test cause you got a question wrong or asked for help a week ago. What’s that have to do with my test now especially if I can show you how I got my answer?
I want to know what going on. Is their disagreement between the staff, it’s harder then it seems to implement? I want to know I just don’t want to feel like we’re being ignored.
I have a bachelor's degree in math, and I've been going through the courses to keep myself sharp and prepare for teacher certification. Khan Academy is great, but the lack of a reset option is an inexcusable source of frustration when I'm trying to get 100% mastery on a unit that I know forwards and backwards! One typo or unresponsive button on my phone/PC, and I'm leveled down on a skill. Retake test. Level up on the original skill, lose points on another skill. Repeat round and round for three hours before finally reaching 100% or taking a baseball bat to the computer. A reset option would drastically reduce the needless waste.
One of the best features of Khan Academy is the fact that it's a free service. However, for the sake of my own sanity I am not above spending my money on used textbooks and going my own way.
I've used Khan Academy for a long time as a student in high school, a tutor for high school students, an undergraduate student, and a graduate student, and I agree that this singular feature is necessary and, ultimately, extremely small. I know enough about web development where as someone said earlier in the thread, this could be handled in a matter of days, even with part time assistance. I'll even volunteer myself to do it for free if that's what it could take.
It's a quality of life fix that keeps many, many people frustrated and unable to enjoy learning the material because at the end the unit test comes in and ruins it all.

We are new users, and already my kids are finding this so frustrating that it is becoming a deal-breaker for using Khan Academy. One of them just told me that it's increasing his negative association of math with having to do boring, repetitive tasks because he keeps having to re-take tests that he knows don't count once he's already made a mistake. What a shame!
I see that people have been asking for this for YEARS, and it's obviously having a major impact on the usefulness of a wonderful resource. Please, please, PLEASE consider making this change!
I've been following this issue thread for about a year and a half now, and I really can't believe there hasn't been anything done about the issue yet. What other things could Khan employees possibly be working on that overshadow this problem, which is obviously making many users quit using Khan Academy? This website is an amazing educational resource, and it's disappointing that its staff has let this issue go un-remedied for so long. Whatever happened to listening to the community?
I agree. What happened? It's been years and the Khan Academy team still hasn't done anything about the many people that want this feature. I also think this is a great feature as you could mistype and answer and you would have to do the whole thing again. It has happened to me many times and it's really frustrating to do the whole test again. Please do add this feature as most, if not all, members would love this.
I agree 100% this would be a fantastic feature. I'm not a student, I'm simply refreshing my mathematics skills and plan to make my way through all of the available Khan Academy courses eventually - purely out of my own personal interest. I am somewhat OCD when it comes to testing, and would like to see 100% in each unit. However, I don't have an unlimited amount of time (juggling work and life) and when I make a silly mistake (or an accidental touch on my tablet) I know I have to waste time answering a bunch of questions with no hope of getting 100% on that try. It feels like a punishment, when learning should be fun!
All else aside, there is an option to watch videos at 2x speed to save precious time, a reset button serves the exact same purpose - saving us time while enjoying learning!
I do agree that the student version should have the option to restrict the reset button but, as I said, I'm no student :) and nobody is marking my work but me!
