Same thing happened to me! At first, I got no new badges, even though I should have achieved some of them.  Later, I checked again, and achieved them!

Good point! Is maelstrom possible? I heard atlas (mastery in 5000 skills) is possible, but I am not sure...

The number still remains after you achieve the badge. Just because the number is still there that does not mean you did not get those points.

It really does not seem fair to new users. I do though, see their perspective for retiring badges, but I still wish they could re-instate them when they get time.

By the way, once there was a badge for answering 60 questions correctly in a row in one skill, but sadly, is was retired.
