The whole point of this feature is to ensure that you know and understand the subject. Perhaps you're coming back from a long summer hiatus with no math -- and you want to brush up on your skills. Leveling down will help you understand how you still need to work on it.

Thomaszou, I am so old that I was born less than six months after Elizabeth II became Queen of England, and I was also fed up with this "feature". I have not done a Khan Academy unit at all in 2022. I'm a lifelong learner, and I have continued my recent studies through other free online resources. I hope you can overcome your dislike of this method used by Khan Academy if your use of Khan is mandated by your school, your parents, or both. Good luck in your future studies!

Lots of people have just stopped doing them it's overly complicated for what is showing actually works, and the practise questions and the videos are good enough. Just doing the practise questions don't give you such a harsh penalty shooting one or more skills all way down to zero for getting just 1 or 2 questions wrong they adjust accurately to how many you got wrong. For now i would just focus on just that the practise questions and not worry about getting 100% on the units.

I realise that this was over a year ago now but I wanted to make sure there was a balance to the voices in this discussion. I personally don't think Khan Academy goes far enough with this incredibly useful feature. Let me explain.

When you "master" a unit, you could have done this in a single day. Now, I could then ask you a question in real life that utilises the skills from that unit a few weeks later and you cannot remember. Just because Khan Academy says you have mastered it, doesn't mean you have. I guess it depends on your goal. My goal is the learn maths, not to complete Khan Academy.

Therefore, I would really like to see a top level mastery challenge on the home page that pulls in questions from every single unit you have completed and remembers which you get right and which you get wrong. When you get a question correct, it is less likely to appear for a set amount of time but, if you get it wrong, it will come back more often. This is true spaced practise. The idea that you can be tested on anything at any time but the more often you get it right, the less often you need to be tested on it.

Having mastery challenges limited to sitting within courses is a shame in my opinion, as it doesn't allow for learners to test the entire breadth of their learning in a single, easy to find location.
