Problems with this equation

I dont seem to understand that these equations equal these solutions. From how khan shows this equations. -2 to the second power for example, should equal -4. The only way I know that would make that solution a positive would be that parenthesis would be in between the number and exponent.

Please answer at the earliest convenience.. Thank you

Hmm. I think there are supposed to be parentheses for both of those because substitution is involved. And you're right - without them, it would change the value of the expressions (to 6 and 9 respectively). It seems that this is an error that no one has caught yet; that's strange. (I haven't studied Algebra 2, but I'm quite sure that any substitution requires parentheses for accuracy.)
