Is there a diagnostic test that I could give my students at the beginning of the year so that I know which course mastery to assign them to for their individual levels? I don't just want to assign the current grade level because I would like to use Khan Academy to fill in some gaps my students may have. Thank you!

There are not currently any diagnostic tests to gauge what level your students are at. However, a possible solution to this would be to utilize the Math: Get ready courses to fill in potential learning gaps.

Many, many teachers do the same thing you want to do. There are several options.
Some teachers tell their students to start at kindergarten and work their way up, taking the course challenge or unit tests to prove mastery, and fill in any holes that crop up.
Other teachers start their students 2-3 levels below their course (for example, starting everyone in Algebra 2 at 7th grade math, with 8th and algebra 1 expected for foundation).
The last group of teachers just assign the Getting Ready course, which is a brief overview of the prerequisites.
