Update: Streaks are going away on January 4, 2021

Thank you for posting this here, in addition to the general News area. Although this announcement is one of the two News features currently shown on the home page of the Support Community, this is subject to being bumped by newer News items. I don't regularly visit that News area, and I suspect that a lot of other regulars here in the Support Community don't either. One News item in particular that I almost missed earlier this year was the one that announced the disappearance of a lot of courses including most partner content and Math for Fun and Glory. I only found out about it because of a reference that someone made to it in a Support Community post. I had no idea how long it had been posted there when I caught up to it 32 days before everything was going to expire because every time a News item is updated, it gets the current date instead of the original post date. If it had originally been posted here in Community -> News and Updates from Khan Academy, I would have likely had a lot more notice and could have done a little bit more of the about-to-disappear content. And unlike the end of streaks (which is fine with me because it will lift some pressure off me), it was not featured in the News section of the Support Community home page.

I am very disappointed with your decision to remove streaks on Khan Academy. the widget doesn't even have to appear on the homepage. Hopefully, you can reverse your decision. 

I have a 500+ day streak. On January 4th, I should get the 500 day streak badge. Do I also get the 200, 100, and 50 day streak badges, or do I just get the highest badge I qualify for?

Well, this is a bit surprising, but all good things must come to an end... plus I understand the technical reasoning. And in a way, daily streaks won't really be going away, because every account has progress tracking, so those of us who want to keep going can still go off that data and compare with others', haha. And who knows, maybe KA can bring it back using this data? I do like the badges.

I always wondered how long I would keep going. 5 years? 10? 15? Having kept my 5.3 year, 1,954 day streak going since streaks first launched 1,969 days ago, it's obviously become a part of my life since then, and it'll be sad seeing it go... Though I will admit I was starting to get tired of having to keep checking if I had done it or not some days, since at this point it's so natural that I kept forgetting if I've even done it!

Well done to the dedicated 5 users who kept a longer streak than me, though just barely, I was only 6 days behind the longest known streak, which is actually shared by 3 of them! You guys kept me going more than anything. Too bad I never got to pass y'all, would have loved to at least pass 2,000 days with y'all! =)

One final thought, to the Khan Academy team. I think all of us who make up the 1%, and many of the 99%, would love to know the official answer to just one question: What is the longest streak on Khan Academy?

Jett Burns there's some truly incredible streaks out there - I'll see what we can do around highlighting people with the longest ones (I believe there's a handful in the 1900+ days range). Huge kudos to you and the other folks in that range 🙇‍♀️

This is really too bad as I loved to have a visual representation of my consistency on the website and a very optional reward system if I managed to have daily consistency for a lenght of time. I'm sad to see this stop

Aw, I'm going to miss those streaks! I didn't have an epic long one but even short ones keep me motivated.

How do I "go off that data" and check my streak?

Once the streaks are discontinued, how long should it take for us to receive our badges? Will we receive them immediately? Sometime in the following week?

There will be bugs; it just happens on something of this scale. Someone that deserves one or more of these badges might not get them. How long should they wait to file a support ticket?

January 4 update! As of 10:30am PST, the streak feature has been turned off and all badges should be awarded. If you think you should have received a badge but didn't, please contact our support team with as much detail about your situation as possible.

I will really miss the streak function on KA. I found that if I logged in to keep my streak, then I would also try to watch a few videos and work on a math problem or two. Nothing lasts forever and if doing away with the streak counter makes KA more viable, then I'm all for it. And in our era of tumult, chaos and the upending of so many norms, thanks to KA for all that you do to make the world a better place, keep us sane, and remind us what it means to contribute positively to our society.

I wanted to pop in again and say thank you everyone who's been so understanding with what I know was a disappointing update for many - the team reads all your comments and is so appreciative of the maturity and empathy this community constantly demonstrates 💙

And the Streak Hall of Fame article is live now - here are the results (the names in quotes are the display names of those learners, as they didn't have usernames set). I don't know about you all, but I'm very much in awe by how many people were able to maintain such high streaks 🤯

Well, I am very disappointed with your decision. I had my account since 9 years ago, and I had never been worried about the streak, until the pandemic started. Now I had a bigger streak than any other I've ever had, and there were only 3 days left before I reach 300. I don't know where you got it from that demotivates users, I was motivated to do it every day just because of the streak. And the badges did not appear for me. Where I can see this? I am Brazilian, I use the Brazilian version of Khan Academy. Does this appear in this version?

Hi Gabriel - I took a look at your account and was able to see the badges for 200, 100, and 50 days in your Sun and Earth badge sections of your profile (in both English and Portuguese). I'm truly sorry that we weren't able to maintain this feature - while we knew that some people were really motivated by it, at the end of the day the tech was outdated and not used by many people, and that was the driving factor to deprecate it as part of our code migration project.

The Streak counter was a huge part of my motivation for learning, which is desperately needed personally. Quite upset to see it taken away like this.

Awww, this makes me sad. I've been keeping up my streak since about 2015. 

Oh well. Maybe it will motivate me to dig more deeply into the course content rather than just focusing on maintaining my streak. I understand that things change and I really appreciate you all for making this site available. Keep up the good work!

I don't get it, what will happen to those streak badges (the longest streak being the 10,000 Year Clock of 100 consecutive days)? Will them be possible to achieve, even if you can't see your own streak? And will these new badges be achievable as you go on (I'm close to 1 year of being a member of KA, so I haven't got the last Sun one, for example)?

I'm kind of sad that the streaks function is going away; it had been one of the learning incentives for me (and I am sure for most to all of the others who did use the streaks function and kept long streaks). When I went to profiles, I would be delighted to see users keeping long streaks and was so proud of them. I love to see people learning more and more.

I wasn't paying attention to other news about Khan Academy, so when the badges came at first I had no idea why I earned them and was surprised.

While those who were keeping long streaks on Khan Academy are more than likely to be sad that the streak function is going away, I believe users will be thrilled by the badges and that their effort and persistence in maintaining those long streaks are being acknowledged in such an explicit and celebratory manner.

Sad to see it gone. It definitely helps as learning incentive.

Sad to see this feature gone, although I see where you guys are coming from. I'm one of those students who really need this kind of "push" to feel motivated, and I'm sure there are other users on the site who feel the same.

Actually, I literally just realized KA retired the streaks a few minutes ago, as I noticed that it disappeared from my home page. I had a streak of almost 700 days (it would have been over 1000 if it weren't for a day when I only read a review lesson, and the system didn't count it as an active day) and now it's all gone. 😞 I'll probably just pretend they're still there and keep doing my lessons every day.

All I can say is, thank you for the badges acknowledging our effort over the years!

Unfortunately, I didn't see it before and only when I refreshed the page today, I noticed that streak is gone. I tried refreshing multiple times as I suspected that it is due to some temporary glitch.
