how do I reset the progress on a course?

Hi Lisa,

Khan Academy currently offers no way to delete progress once it’s registered on the account, and this is actually intended to avoid scenarios in which users could lose actual progress due to misuse or malfunction of any kind.

So, even if you’ve practiced that subject before, you can always redo any exercises you’ve completed and watch any videos again, or simply continue from where you’ve left, whatever works best for you!

Now, if you'd really like to start from scratch, you can always create a new account. Just note that badges, points, and your streak would not transfer from one account to another since there’s no way to merge accounts or share progress between them.

If you prefer to keep your old account as it is, there’s another more laborious method for losing mastery: getting answers deliberately wrong. This is not recommended since it will not be a true reflection of your learning path. Besides, it might take a long time if you have mastered many skills.

Hope this helps!

You might consider that if someone needs to do a "delete progress" operation, they can confirm it with a password entry. I would also like to see a "Delete Progress" feature.

I totally agree that there needs to be a delete progress option for teachers!!  My students are special ed and do not have the ability to progress past certain levels - no matter how hard they try.  Khan Rep's say that the students can retake the course, but they actually can't because it says they have a proficiency in the class.  It truly is an aggravation.  I LOVE Khan Academy but sadly will have to move on to something else for my kiddos.

It would be useful to reset. Coming back after about 5 years to brush up on maths is a bit of a pain without being able to delete progress.

What if Khan Academy added like an additional Area.

Example I already completed 3rd grade math.  I would like to complete it again from the start, a new OPTION would appear for 3rd grade math (3rd Grade +) with areas for me to master again, just for myself, and it would start from the beginning again, while keeping the original.  Additionally could change the colors, that could indicate I achieved it again.

I was able to accomplish this by deleting my entire account. I am not sure why there isn't an easier option.

I, too, would like this option. I have students who used Khan a few years ago, but need to brush up on those skills so it would be great if there was a reset option. I liked the separate area idea above as well.

Same-it's really annoying to have to delete and rearrange your account.

Extremely frustrating that this simple option is not provided.

As a teacher testing out the Chemistry course, I find it very frustrating that I can't reset my "progress." I'm not a student, I'm not accountable to a teacher, I'm just doing a test-run on your app and would like to be able to do demonstrations for different groups of students on my own account -- obviously this would work far better if I could reset.

Teachers should be able to reset their own and their students' progress.

I would also like to be able to reset progress.

Here’s a draft for your post that clearly communicates the idea while addressing the frustration and offering a constructive alternative:

Feature Suggestion: Ability to Restart Progress Without Losing Completion Data

As a teacher, I love using Khan Academy to explore and demonstrate concepts to my students, but one limitation has been frustrating: the inability to reset progress in a course or topic. Often, I want to restart a topic, not to erase past progress, but to accurately show how long it takes to complete it from the beginning or to refresh my own understanding.

I’d like to propose an alternative to a full reset. Instead of wiping out previous data, Khan Academy could introduce a “Restart Topic” or “New Attempt” feature. This feature would allow users to begin a topic from scratch while still preserving records of past completions. It could even show the number of times the topic has been completed (e.g., “7 completions”). This way, teachers can demonstrate the process to their students multiple times without losing their own progress history.

This would be especially helpful for educators, tutors, or even students who want to revisit material as a new challenge while keeping their growth visible.

What do you think? I’d love to hear feedback or ideas from the community!

2. Class-Specific Data (Teacher Whiteboard)

Currently, my progress applies across all my classes. It would be helpful to have a class-specific “teacher whiteboard” tab, where my work is isolated to that particular class. For example:
• If I teach four classes, each class would have its own set of data that only applies to students in that class.
• My general profile remains unchanged, but within the class whiteboard, I can reset progress, complete assignments, or demonstrate topics—keeping everything tied to that class.
• Each year, when I add a new class, I would start fresh with new data for that group while maintaining records for previous years.

This feature would allow teachers to model concepts and track their engagement in a way that’s relevant to each unique class without affecting their overall account data.

Even:
When teachers add a new class, they could have the option to toggle a “Sandbox Mode” for their work in that class.
• All activities completed by the teacher in Sandbox Mode (e.g., solving problems, completing videos, or taking quizzes) are stored as progress tied only to that specific class.
• This ensures the teacher’s general profile progress is unaffected, and each class gets a clean slate.

At the end of the school year, teachers can archive a class and automatically reset their Sandbox data for a fresh start with a new group of students. Past Sandbox data would remain accessible in archived classes for review if needed.

To keep things organized:
• Teacher View: Includes tools for solving problems and marking completions in real time during class.
• Student View: Allows students to see their own progress but doesn’t show the teacher’s Sandbox Mode activity.

The Sandbox Mode could function as a “layer” on top of existing progress-tracking features, requiring minimal changes to the core platform. A toggle button for teachers (e.g., “Enter Sandbox Mode”) ensures they can switch between teaching and personal progress effortlessly.

This would allow teachers to model and demonstrate topics for specific classes while maintaining clarity in their own progress and seamlessly transitioning to new classes each year.

An option like this would be great for studying for the SAT.

I second this. I want to be able to redo some SAT practices.
