How can we help KA with adding missing transcripts and correcting bad auto-generated captions?

I was rebuffed when I asked about this, and told to look into KA Careers, which is a) not my focus right now and b) not viable with my university schedule. I would love to work for Khan Academy at some point in my career, but for now I'm just attempting to do what I can to help out, free of charge.

Wow, that's disappointing.

I am unwilling to commit to a job or internship, as my chronic intractable depression makes me unreliable for such commitments.  KA used to allow me to volunteer my time officially in meaningful ways (such as 10 years ago with the captioning project, and 5 years ago with DGPA).  If they trusted me to do captions 10 years ago, why wouldn't they trust a volunteer to help now?  They could even crowdsource it where they have 2 or 3 volunteers (selected randomly from a larger pool) independently fix the captions, and it is automatically accepted if the only differences are in spaces.

The other alternatives are for them to prioritize paying staff to fix stuff in a timely manner rather than adding entire new courses, or to stop claiming they care about providing a world-class education.  (I am soooooo frustrated with the stuff that was reported broken months or years ago but has never been properly fixed.)

Update: All of the videos with missing transcripts in the Python course have requests already submitted to our third-party vendor. It generally takes around 1-3 weeks for them to process these requests, so that's why some new videos may not have a transcript visible.

Is this to say Khan Academy doesn't actually have an internal running list of transcript-less content? I can add a feature to my extension to track which videos lack a transcription, but that seems like it should be accessible from your end. I was hoping Khan Academy had an API allowing you to check for such things, but it looks like that got shut down since I left.

I have seen a few dozen videos I'm aware of without any transcription, and many are a decade old. If you confirm that Khan Academy does not have a tally, I can drop a list here once I gather it.

You could check the comments or the publish date on YouTube. Or if it's easier to just include all videos, I can filter out newer ones.

Is it in-line with policy to include disfluencies? I have encountered this in some transcriptions but in most it is omitted (I think, appropriately). Additionally, aren't transcriptions intended to properly capitalize proper nouns? It seems like some of these were either written in haste or generated through a program.

The very first video in the Python course, uploaded over a year ago, is missing the transcript.
I used the "Report a Mistake" feature on that page to report it.  Does no one on KA staff know that it was reported?  

It seems like many reporting systems on the KA website do not work well.  This is incredibly frustrating.  I never know whether a report is going to do any good.  Maybe this is why so many things (such as the broken Python Help Requests) went unreported for months -- because others have given up on reporting things.

Evan, the quantity of missing transcriptions on videos is such that I would like to ask you what format might be the most convenient. It is not a small number.

And I second Janice's comment on the reporting system. The only way I ever get feedback on my reports is when I do it through the support site, and they tend to stonewall hard, because the content team does NOT answer to the support staff.

What is the point of the block transcript showing whether or not the transcript tab is selected? If it's for visibility, high traffic videos will have comments burying it. Help me understand the reasoning.

Side note: in the newer courses, there is a string (like "x7a03a96a83aa80ff:") that appears twice in each link. I'm not sure the purpose at all, but it would make the links a lot easier to track and follow if they didn't randomly go into an obscure encoding string. It was not necessary for the old courses, it isn't necessary for the new courses either.

Thanks Vox Moduli, I've shared that with the team. Some of the partner course content is owned and hosted by partner organizations, so we have to rely on them to provide the video transcripts. I'm told the Constitution 101 course is being looked at and should have the transcripts available in a few weeks.

JaniceHolz I went through the Python course and forwarded all videos that are missing transcripts to that team. They are double-checking that requests have been submitted for all of those, so you should also see transcripts for those videos in a few weeks.

I was also able to look up all of the content mistakes you have reported. I commented on all of the ones that have been fixed. The remainders have all been reported to the relevant teams but I don't have a timeline on updates for those.

Evan Lewis Unrelated but previously discussed, I went through the entirety of the New Zealand History discussion board and flagged all the non-questions. If this is something you want to ensure doesn't happen in the future, please talk to the facilitator of the course, who was encouraging it. He's still quite active, so you shouldn't have any trouble getting in touch with him.

I still don't understand. I used the "Report a Mistake" feature over 2 months ago to report the missing transcript on the very first video in the Python course.  I asked you whether anyone on KA knew that it was reported, but I did not see a response to that.
You say you reported the rest of the content mistakes to the relevant teams.  I thought "Report a Mistake" did that automatically.
What happens when I use "Report a Mistake"?  Why did nothing happen on most of them until I created a fuss here?

Is it going to take a few weeks to get the Python transcripts posted because someone is being pulled off something else to create the transcripts?  I volunteered to help by doing the transcripts.  I already did the transcript for the first video.  Is the transcript I included with my mistake report even going to be used?
All the other Python transcripts could have been ready to be plugged in weeks ago if anyone had ever responded.  I was considered good enough to do captioning for KA 10 years ago.  Why is my offer being ignored now?  

KA staff keep saying my contributions are valued.  Sometimes it feels that way, other times not.

I also find it incredibly frustrating that new content is continuing to be rolled out when there are things that were reported broken years ago that are still not fixed.  Will they ever get fixed?  How is this providing a world-class education?

(I know you are just one person.  Is there some other more productive place I could express my frustration?)

You're correct that reporting mistakes on the content items goes directly to the relevant content team. That's the recommended approach since it eliminates anybody being in the middle. They dedicate time to review these once a month, but given the amount of reports they receive and other tasks they have a backlog of reports.

All of the captions and transcripts are created by a third-party vendor, not by KA's content teams. The 1-3 week estimate is the typical turnaround time that it takes for them to complete our requests. The videos you reported already had requests submitted, but were not completed for some reason. Our team is still working with the third-party provider to figure out why it is taking them so long.

I'm not sure when or why the transition to a third-party vendor for captioning was made, but currently KA is not accepting or reviewing user-submitted video transcripts.

I totally understand the frustration with the response times for submitted content mistakes. I encourage you to make a separate post about this in Content Requests & Feedback and I can make sure it gets shared with our support and content teams! (I've already shared much of your feedback here, but having a separate post would be helpful so others can also add their input!)

The solution you are looking for is transparency and willingness to work with volunteer staff. Janice and I are willing to do a lot for you guys. It's up to your team to take the help. I appreciate the receptiveness you've shown, but it remains to be seen that the teams behind the scenes care at all about what you or I have to say. NovaLabs has been out since I was in a booster seat (I'm in college now) and I know for a fact I was not the first to report it. Khan Academy needs to work on their ability to handle third parties, apparently. It's very frustrating to hear a boilerplate response about how overstretched the team is while they:

- entirely fail to communicate, except when we harass support staff enough to get a non copy-pasted answer

- refuse to onload new talent (I was told to look into careers instead of being provided a suggestion of how to help meaningfully, after I told them I was interested in casual volunteering and that my full-time engineering degree plan did not work with a full-time job)

The engineering blog was interesting, but hasn't been posted to for over a year and a half as far as I can tell.

They shouldn't require us to harass a non-responsible party. Content is their business? They should check their inbox. God knows you check the report queue. I have so little faith in them I am compiling a PDF of content errors, which I would like you to forward to them when the time comes. Fully linked with explanations. Additionally, I notice the lack of participation from... anyone other than us three? On the questions boards, I see Charles LaCour, Jim E, Richard, Janice, and a few others. Those of us active on the support site form an even smaller circle. I don't think there's much of a point.

Moreover, gathering community support doesn't matter. The most popular post to this forum of all time was from half a decade ago, asking for a dark mode. Next, one from 8 years ago. Followed by 3 more things that never got implemented. I reviewed the top 10 posts (at least from the general board). Only one was implemented (the worst and least useful of all).

I don't want to be assured the team listens to popular support when it doesn't. If reality sucks, give it to me straight.

Frankly, you are the best member of the community staff and I'd rather a dialogue with specifically you and other mature contributors like Janice, rather than relying on a questionable community that seems to be a few years gone. The two of us are suggesting actionable options and providing real, specific reports of what is going wrong with the site. Maybe a few threads for different topics for organizational purposes, but trying to get a crowd behind us will do nothing. We have our sole in, and it's you. Nothing else is relevant.

There is no ticket number - I reported it through the Report a Mistake on the video itself, the way I have been told I am supposed to.  

Thank you for letting me know how Report a Mistake posts are handled.  I can understand the frustration of having a huge backlog (I was once the only maintenance programmer for a mainframe computer system, and I inherited a 4-inch binder full of help requests - though some were for enhancements rather than errors). However, if they have such a backlog, why is fixing mistakes not a higher priority than creating brand new courses?  Is it a higher priority to build new mediocre things (whose mistakes may also never get fixed) than to fix the existing stuff?

I question how useful it is to post in the Support Community.  So few people look in the Support Community, most posts only ever get a few votes or comments, if any. 
I have made 16 posts in the Support Community in the last 3-4 months.  Half have 0 likes; the rest have 1-3 likes.  Other than 3 KA staff and myself, only 5 distinct users have commented on them. 
This seems typical when I look at posts made by other people too.  Is Khan Academy basing their decisions on posts that less than a dozen people vote or comment on?  If not, then do most posts make any difference at all, other than the responses from KA Staff?
I will try to summon up the motivation to make yet another Support Community post; I do not share your optimism that any other users will even read it, let alone vote for it or add input.

Side note, Evan Lewis. This answer makes me irrationally angry. Is it a rule violation? I don't know.

Thanks I've shared both of those! Our content teams are able to update incorrect transcripts, so feel free to submit any corrections using the "Report a Mistake" option. The reason for the delayed changes is due to the way our content publishing process works.

JaniceHolz Unfortunately it's hard to estimate how long it takes for these reports to be reviewed since it can vary greatly across teams/courses. I know each content team dedicates time to reviewing these reports at least once every month, but the response times will vary depending on the number of reports they receive and the number of courses they manage.

If you've reported it via the "Report a Mistake" option on the content item directly, it will get to the correct team eventually, I just can't give a definite time of when that will be unfortunately. If there's any reports that you think might be overlooked (perhaps 3+ months ago), you can send them to me and I can check to make sure that they are still marked as unresolved.

There is still no transcript for the first Python video, which I reported using "Report a mistake" over 6 months ago.  Is there any update on that?  Until it is uploaded, could you pin my Tip with the unofficial transcript?

I notice that once I bring things to your attention, other KA staff are more likely to respond.  I appreciate your help.  At the same time, it's frustrating that I so often have to contact you to get other KA staff to provide what seems to me like baseline customer service.  I still have not gotten a response to my 2nd email to the accessibility team well over a month ago about the delay with getting some transcripts uploaded and other transcripts corrected.
