Summer Math Work
I am a math department head for grades 5-12 at an independent school. For years we have assigned summer math packets for our students to give them practice over prerequisite skills, and assess their readiness when school starts. It has been very helpful at the beginning of school to not spend so much time reviewing previous concepts. However teachers spend the first week grading multiple packets that if we did not grade them they would be junk. How could I use Khan academy for the same idea? I love the idea of them having extra practice, video etc where they need it, but I do not want an assignment that is so much time they cannot enjoy their summer.
This year, I printed out coupons for my top performers and they were able to use those coupons during the school year to take 10, 20 or 30- minutes off one of their weekly Khan assignments. (It seemed a fair trade-off to me for the amount of work that a number of these kiddos did during the summer!)
