Unit Mastery
My grade 6 students have each put in close to 10,000 minutes of math effort in Khan Academy this year. A couple suggestions from them:
- give "attempted" 25 points (currently 0) - when students try a new skill, but get less than 70% correct, they get no points; this frustrates them! Give them some points.
- consider dropping the green/grey dots showing which questions they got right/wrong - they become obsessed with the green dots (getting questions right) and are unwilling to proceed without help, or confirming with the teacher they are correct.
Addressing both of these points will make students more willing to try and fail (as they'll still be rewarded for their attempt, and not punished for getting questions wrong).
