Why is the osmosis unit in High School Biology so outdated?
I've learned a bit about osmosis already in my Honors Biology class and this unit doesn't cover most of it. First of all, it doesn't even mention tonicity, or the relative concentration of solutes, until the last article. Also, the videos tell us that the reason water molecules have a net movement from areas of low solute concentration to areas of high solute concentration is because the solutes block the water molecules from exiting a cell, which is not true. The solute actually exhibits a charge that attracts water molecules. I even found a mistake in one of the practice assignments. It stated that a turgid plant cell had a net movement of water out of the cell, which is the complete opposite of what the answer should be. I hope all of this is fixed soon. For now, we just have to go along with it.
