How are Khanmigo and Chat GPT-4 different?

I’m debating on signing up for the waitlist to Khanmigo, however I’m unsure if I should since I already have GPT-4. I’ve been using GPT-4 to study for my AP BC Calculus class, an so far it’s been able to properly compute all questions an explain them to me. Its only real downside is its inability to properly notate a lot of questions, and lack of any sort of graph analysis or graphing capabilities.

I’m going to be heading to college in a few months (Georgia Tech, woo!) and I’ll be studying some very rigorous courses since I plan to major in CS. I want to make sure I’m absolutely as prepared as possible before then, so I’m debating signing up for Khanmigo, but since it’s powered BY GPT-4, I want to know the difference between Khanmigo and GPT-4 so I don’t end up wasting money/time.

I’ve tried looking this up to no avail online and the Khanmigo FAQ doesn’t answer this question, so if someone could tell me what the difference is, I would appreciate it.

Sorry I'm just getting to this, but I think this is an excellent question!

The main difference between Khanmigo and GPT-4 is that Khanmigo is specifically tailored to Khan Academy's course content and learning philosophies. Khanmigo can answer general questions about a subject, but it is also able to answer questions about specific content items on Khan Academy, making its responses more specific and useful if you are using Khan Academy's courses as your primary resource for learning.

When you open the Khanmigo chat on a lesson page in Khan Academy, Khanmigo is prompted behind the scenes with information about the lesson that you are on and the surrounding course content. So for example, you can ask questions about a specific exercise on Khan Academy without having to explain/type the question, or you can ask a question about a specific moment in one of the videos. Khanmigo can also recommend other content items for you to review prerequisite skills.

Another notable difference is that Khanmigo is designed to promote a growth mindset by acting like a tutor/coach, rather than a simple answer-provider. When you ask a question, Khanmigo will help walk you through the process of arriving at the correct solution, rather than just giving you the answer or full explanation right away. It will ask you to share your ideas and thought process when you make a mistake, so that it can point out where you went wrong and offer additional practice and explanations.

In regards to your specific questions:
- Khanmigo uses our KaTeX typesetting for math equations, so it can render complex math equations in an easy-to-read way.
- There is a math input toolbar available in the Khanmigo chat that allows you to add math symbols to your messages. This has the most commonly used math symbols, but it does not yet contain all of the calculus-related symbols, most notably the integral symbol.
- Khanmigo is not able to analyze an image of a graph or produce images of graphs from an equation or description
