How can we help?

Content update: New Grammar courses for grades 5–10

Updated

This summer, Khan Academy is introducing three new grammar courses designed to help students strengthen essential language skills, become stronger and more confident writers, and prepare for coursework and assessments.

Whether students are looking to build a stronger foundation in grammar, target specific skills, or prepare for standardized tests, these courses provide dedicated instruction and practice across a wide range of grammar and language topics.

This update is part of Khan Academy’s 2026 back-to-school content rollout. You can view the full 2026 Back To School course overview here.

Introducing the new grammar courses

We're launching three new grade-banded grammar courses:

  • 5th & 6th grade grammar
  • 7th & 8th grade grammar
  • 9th & 10th grade grammar

Each course is designed to provide grade-level instruction and practice, with the complexity of skills, examples, and exercises increasing across grade bands.

Together, these courses provide comprehensive coverage of grammar and language skills, from parts of speech and sentence structure to style and tone.

What can students expect?

Each grammar course includes:

  • more than 60 targeted practice exercises
  • additional mixed-practice opportunities
  • instructional articles with student-friendly language and examples
  • engaging grammar videos, with more videos coming soon
  • explanations of common mistakes and misconceptions

Students can use these courses in a variety of ways. Some may choose to work through an entire course from beginning to end, while others may focus on specific grammar skills that need extra attention.

These courses can also be used to:

  • prepare for state assessments
  • prepare for the SAT® or ACT®
  • strengthen writing and language skills
  • review concepts taught in class

What can teachers expect?

The new grammar courses are designed to be flexible resources that can support classroom instruction, intervention, enrichment, and independent practice.

Teachers will find:

  • standards-aligned grammar instruction and practice
  • comprehensive coverage of grammar and language skills
  • targeted exercises that make it easier to address specific skill gaps
  • mixed practice opportunities that reinforce multiple concepts
  • instructional resources that can be used alongside existing curriculum and coursework

The grade-banded structure also allows students to receive instruction and practice that is appropriate for their grade band while building toward more advanced language skills. Because skills progress within and across grade bands, teachers can easily provide differentiated instruction, assigning practice in a previous grade band to fill gaps or in a more advanced grade band to provide enrichment.

How do these courses fit with existing grammar resources?

If you're already using Khan Academy's existing Grammar course, don't worry—it's not going anywhere.

The original all-ages Grammar course will remain available to all Khan Academy users.

These new courses provide an additional option for learners and educators who are looking for rigorous,  on-level instruction and practice.

Why are these courses being added?

Grammar and language skills play an important role in reading, writing, communication, and academic success across subjects.

These new courses are designed to give students more opportunities to develop and practice essential language skills through accessible instructional resources, targeted practice, and grade-appropriate content.

Whether students are preparing for a test, filling learning gaps, or simply working to become stronger writers, these courses provide flexible pathways to support their goals.
