How can we help?

What kind of images can I upload to Khanmigo?

Updated

If you're working through a challenging math or science problem, you can upload an image in your Khanmigo conversation in the Tutor Me: Math and Science activity. Whether it’s a diagram, graph, handwritten work, or another relevant visual, adding an image helps Khanmigo better understand your question and provide more specific and personalized support.

This article explains how to use the image upload feature effectively, which types of images work best, and what to avoid—so you can get the clearest and most helpful guidance possible.

Which types of images work best for Khanmigo?

To get the most out of this feature on Khanmigo, make sure your image clearly supports your question or learning goal in math or science. Here are a few good examples:

  • A photo of your handwritten math problem to check your steps

  • A geometry diagram you’re trying to solve

  • A science diagram (like a circuit or a cell structure) that needs an explanation

  • A graph or data set that you want help interpreting

How can you upload an image?

  1. Navigate to the Tutor Me Math and Science activity on Khanmigo.

  2. Click the paperclip icon in the chat.

  3. Choose your image file—or just drag and drop it into the chat window.

     4. Add your question or prompt—this helps Khanmigo know how to help you. It is required to include a message or question with your image. The system doesn't allow image-only submissions.

     5. Click the Send icon.

What image types and file sizes are supported?

You can add the following types of images:

  • png
  • jpeg

Screenshots, mobile phone photos, and scanned documents all work great.

What not to upload

Images that are off-topic or not related to learning may be ignored or flagged by our moderation system. Please avoid uploading:

  • Blurry, blank, or unreadable images

  • Images unrelated to schoolwork or learning

  • Inappropriate or offensive content

Important: If a child’s chat is flagged by our moderation system, their connected adult will automatically get an email notification. This email notification includes an AI-generated description of the flagged image. Parents can also review past flagged Khanmigo conversations through their child’s chat history page.

What happens to the images?

Images you upload are only visible during your live chat session. Once you close the chat, the image is removed from our systems to protect your privacy and ensure security.

In your chat history, you’ll see a placeholder along with a brief, AI-generated description of the image, so you can still reference what was shared, even though the original image is no longer stored.

Khan Academy does not retain or store your image after the chat session ends.
