How can we help?

How can I use Khan Academy to homeschool my child?

Updated

Khan Academy understands homeschooling is a great option for many students and is proud to be an excellent resource for enhancing your child's homeschool education.

To start off, we’d like to emphasize a few things:

👋 Friendly reminder: while Khan Academy and Khan Kids provide valuable educational resources, neither are accredited schools. Work completed on the sites does not count towards a formal diploma or degree.

  • However, we offer a wealth of learning materials that can complement your child's education, stay on par with their peers, and help them prepare for standardized tests.
  • We encourage you to research the homeschool regulations and requirements for your particular state: Homeschool Laws by State

📚Khan Academy offers content in multiple languages, created by experts, covering various subjects to support your child's interests and educational goals.

  • We provide articles, videos, exercises, quizzes, and tests for immediate feedback.

  • Topics include science, English Language Arts, math, grammar, art history, computer programming, economics, AP prep, SAT prep, and more

  • All content is completely free too!

🧸If your child is under the age of 7, or working on foundational skills, we recommend checking out Khan Academy Kids!

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let's dive into the steps to get you and your homeschool kiddos started on Khan Academy!

Step 1. Decide what Khan Academy content you’d like your child to work on, what your homeschool classroom routine will be, and how Khan Academy fits into that routine.

Step 2. Set up accounts for yourself, your child, and any other adults involved in the homeschooling process on Khan Academy

  • This is easier than it sounds and is completely free!

  • Start by making yourself an account on Khan Academy

  • If you already have an account, log into it and make sure the parent role is enabled on your account settings page.
  • Then from your Parent Dashboard make Khan Academy accounts for your children, or connect to their existing account
    • If your child is under 13 and does not have an account yet, you can create the account for them.

    • If your child already has an account, you can send an invitation to connect with their account, which they need to then approve from their Learner Home. They can also add you from their Learner home, as shown below.

  • If there are other adults in the homeschooling process, they can connect via the above parent/child relationship or the teacher/student relationship. Both relationships can make assignments for the child and view their progress, so no need to stress when choosing!

Step 3. Have your child begin working on Khan Academy!

This could be through:

  • Self-guided practice on Khan Academy content for a designated amount of time
  • Assignments you make for your child to complete specific content items. You can make these easily from your Parent Dashboard!

    • Tip: Assigning the Course Challenge can help you gauge skills in a specific course your child may need extra practice on. Example: Get Ready for 3rd Grade Course Challenge

Step 4. Monitor their progress through your Parent Dashboard

You can view your child’s progress on Khan Academy in 3 places:

  1. The Activity Overview Report on the "Activity" tab
Click on your child’s name to view their activity in the courses across Khan Academy.  This includes all the work your child has done on Khan Academy, broken down by Khan Academy course.
  2. The Individual Student Report from the "Activity" tab
Click the person icon next to your child's name to be taken directly to their Learner Home. Here you'll see additional progress info, and if applicable, their Khanmigo Chat History and Khanmigo settings page.

  3. The Assignment Scores report from the "Assignments" tab
If you have made assignments for your child, you can see the scores for them here.

Step 5: Offer guidance and support as they work through the content

You are your child's biggest supporter! Below are some resources to help you along the way:

Step 6: Consider Khanmigo!
Khanmigo is our AI powered tutor for learners, and also has a variety of tools built just for parents! Khanmigo is a great option if your child could use an additional helping hand while working on Khan Academy, and if you would like some additional tools in your toolkit when helping them do so.

You can learn more about Khanmigo for learners and parents here on the Khanmigo website and on the Khanmigo section of the Help Center.

We hope this was a helpful guide in understanding how Khan Academy can help in your homeschool journey. If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out to the Khan Academy Support Team! We are here and happy to help.
